Moving Just Joey ( So. Ca.) Too Risky now?

After reading the transplanting posts on 'search', I'm still unsure if it's too risky. I am dying to do some re-landscaping and there is my sweet big fella(3-4 ft. tall) right in the way. It has leafed out nicely, though not full as yet. I actually had to pick off 2 buds. So, for here in south Orange Co., how much risk would it be? I've held off fertilizing till I decide about the move. Many thanks for your thoughts/experiences.

There is some risk.
You will probably be OK, but it will be set back, and if the weather turns (which is predicted) it could get dicey.
Just Joey isn't the MOST vigorous rose in the pantheon, either.

If the rose is important to you, well, if you can bear to wait for next winter, I would do so.

I would wait until Friday, because we're expecting a warm day or two in the middle of the week, cooling off again next weekend. Unless you can shade it with a patio umbrella or something to get it through those few hot days.

I didn't make it very clear what I was up to. I have a small area next to the back door. The soil is not good so I'm going to put them in pots. Another advantage with pots is I can over winter them in my greenhouse so hardiness is less critical. Karen, Polka fits what I'm looking for except its' a climber which is probably too big for that area. I picked JJ as I've read that it looks good when open, although I've never seen it. I have a few HT's but only one is nice when open. I didn't use it as an example as it is not widely grown - Limelight. Peace looks good when open so I suppose it's off-spring does too. Several people listed Chicago Peace in a list of roses they like.

I would just add that Just Joey in my garden (and again I'm Southern California) blooms a moderate amount; however, I second the comment that it "puts out basals rarely." The bloom is the largest of just about any rose I have every seen at least in my garden. Some blooms are almost 10" wide when fully open. People always comment on their unusually large size, although it took a couple years for this rose to get going. It is very disease resistant here. The color is of course wonderful and the fragrance is strong to my nose however I find the blooms blow quickly, especially when considering their size.

divamum, it was crazy fast, once it finally got rolling! I sat with a big empty box of a room for about three weeks waiting for the cabinet guy. But once he started installing, that meant Joshua could come put in my soapstone, and everything else just fell into place very quickly. I went from NOTHING to almost everything in literally 48 hours. I think that, by the end of this week, I'll be done with everything in the kitchen, except of course the backsplash! :) malhgold, the range is an Aga Legacy--and the gas is finally turned on!! Woohooo!! Wouldn't you know it, though, I have to teach tonight and then I'm going out of town for two days, so I won't be able to actually cook on it until Friday. Ugh!! fern4, the wood is cherry in a natural finish. Thanks so much for the McIntyre link. There are some beautiful options there. I will have to spend some time perusing! plllog, one of my first choices was a pale green glass tile with a little cobalt glass thrown in for accent pieces. I may have to revisit that. If I can find the pics again, I'll post them. I'm loving these suggestions. Sometimes my head gets stuck on one thing and, even though I know it's not what I want, I can't move past it. This is really helping me think outside my self-imposed box.

I know I'm a little late for this party, but wanted to throw something in. I love the iridescent tiles but worried because they are so trendy now, glass tile seems to be in every kitchen now. I decided on mother of pearl tile, I fell in love with it a couple of years ago, and thankfully the price has come down enough so I can afford it (I actually got mine coming from ebay). Yea! Two of our most knowledgeable zone 9-10-ers.responding..thank you both! Yes, I do love this faithful producer of big, fat, lovely smelling blossoms, and healthy leaves, so I think I will just leave him in place and bide my time till next winter.
Hmmm, may I hijack my own post and ask if you can reccommend anything comparable to J.J, for health,size of flowers scent, and production of blooms, for our area? I am a sucker ... oh no :>O :>)...for the mix of apricot-pink and/or cream (think Chicago Peace color), but anything that meets the qualities of J.J. would be wonderful to know about. Don't mean to be greedy, though. Thanks again for your replies!

If (when) we get a streak of all day long "may-grey/june-gloom", that is a good time.

'Clementina Carbonieri' is a gorgeous tea rose in that color range.

Oh yes, hoovb, that is a gorgeous rose, and i am assuming it's been great for you here in our zone. I adore Chicago Peace, but it isn't prolific enough. This one looks similar. Thank you!

Apricot/Pink/Creme?
Large bush.
Easy-Care (really, NO care needed)
Continuous-Bloom.

Blooms are smallish, until the plant really matures, and are never gigantic,
but they are always lovely and prolific.
