This was a timely reminder and "how to" for me. Now my (2) 6 month old roses on either side of an arbor are tied down. They went from 4' tall to 2 ' tall but I know it's for the best bloom in the future. I LOVE these rose videos, wonderful info for people like me with no local resources. Now if I could only see one on how to graft onto fortuniana rootstock I would be in heaven. One of the few HT's I have is on fort. roots and has thrown a branch from below the graft. I have the wild idea to try grafting onto that and have a two-fer rose--part Spectra HT and the other hmmmm maybe E.Veyrat Hermanos which is growing sluggishly own-root. Please Mr. Zimmerman can you do a grafting video??? Denise

Re the Lady Banks - is it white or yellow? If you let the laterals grow long, and train them horizontally, they will climb nicely, and make new laterals, on...and on... see pic. The largest rose in the world is a Lady Banks which has been growing in Arizona forever - it covers several acres now...I hasten to add that this is not necessary, but wanted to point out that it will get as big as you let it in your nice warm/hot climate (that is a rose which LOVES heat). Here is my yellow Lady Banks going up our house (those are the second & third stories of our house - the rose is completely covered in leaves and blooms all the way to the ground). Jackie

Sheryl, what you can do with roses like the last picture is just wait till one of those clusters stops blooming and cut the whole cluster back further down on the stem. The rose is big enough that a little haircut like that won't bother it at all, and that would involve no more than a dozen pruning cuts for the blooms there. You do want to deadhead when possible because it signals the rose to keep putting out more blooms, assuming it's a repeat bloomer. Cynthia

sb-----ny, On a narrow, fan type trellis, horizontal canes are not needed. Minimal manhandling will be needed to get canes in place in your case. Probably 3 strong canes are all you need. Two will grow on the trellis's extreme edges, and one up the middle. You may have to fight your grafted Eden to keep it growing in such a confined space. Those fan trellis are often quickly overgrown by most climbers. My earlier response was made regarding growing a climber on a wide, horizontal fencelike support, hence the need to bend canes horizontally. There's no need for such gymnastics on a relatively small, vertical fan trellis. Moses
