HFGH on sale

Just letting folks know the hfgh is on sale Today tomorrow and Monday. I picked up a 10x12 today it is on sale for $599 and I had a 20% coupon so made it a sweet deal. I will show pics as I go along. The smaller one is on sale for $299

Yes my darling sister warned me about this. She also sent me the coupon and now I am a proud owner of the 10x12 HFGH! It is in a box in my garage.

In his blog about building his new 6x8 HFGH, dewey1945 shows how he applied 6 mil UV resistant plastic to the outside of his panels. I havenÃ¢ÂÂt seen this idea discussed anywhere before, so IÃ¢ÂÂm interested in following his blog: Apply the UV Resistant Skin When I replaced my roof panels in October of 2011, I applied a clear marine coating product to the outside of my new panels, before installing them. I also applied the same product to half of a scrap of HF polycarbonate (left over from installing my exhaust fan.) IÃ¢ÂÂve left it exposed to the sun since October 2011. So far the treated side still looks shiny and clear, while the untreated side has started to look a bit dull and cloudy. Might be a good sign, but I think itÃ¢ÂÂs still too early to tell if this product really does help. My cost to purchase a gallon of the product was around $100. The company (Top Secret Coatings) seems to have changed their product line since my purchase, so IÃ¢ÂÂve emailed them to ask which product is the current equivalent of what I used. IÃ¢ÂÂll post back here as with that info as soon as they reply. ItÃ¢ÂÂs too bad we have to wait at least a few years to see if ideas like this truly will help extend the life of the HFGH polycarbonate panels. From my reading, folks in southern states with intense sun seem to report more panel failure. The topic hasnÃ¢ÂÂt come up here at GardenWeb for a while, so IÃ¢ÂÂm hoping that means folks in other climates arenÃ¢ÂÂt having nearly as much of a problem. If you donÃ¢ÂÂt do anything to protect your panels, and notice some problems in years to come, you can order replacement panels from Harbor Freight. The HF panels wonÃ¢ÂÂt last as long as higher quality twinwall polycarbonate from other supply companies, (with real UV protection,) but they do cost a lot less. FYI, hereÃ¢ÂÂs a summary of my pricing research from October 2011, for just enough material to replace the roof on my 10x12 HFGH, including shipping to my state: Farmtek 4mm twinwall polycarbonate, approx 10 yr warranty, about $410 Solexx 3.5 mm, (a flexible translucent white greenhouse covering material) about $350 Harbor Freight 4mm panels, $135 IÃ¢ÂÂll be sure to post back with the Top Secret clear coating product number, so itÃ¢ÂÂs recorded here for the thread.

safaribabe: I didn't do a huge amount of research, but did enough to know that there's a lot of help out there, both in improvements and "gotchas" notification. I have built two hoophouses, and realized that I wanted something that would shed snow better and be better insulated. After some preliminary pricing of the HFGH I think it would have cost me almost as much in material to do a wood frame with the twinwall covering. BTW, on my coupon, there is a place to invite a friend to be placed on the HF preferred customer list to receive emails. If you haven't gotten signed up, send me your email and I will enter it. Good for you, that's what I paid for mine last fall as well! (Then I had to let it "age" in the box for a while.) Our is up now and still in progress...hopefully ready for my plants in late October. It's a shame the manual is so awful, but I still think the quality of the kit is very good for the price. Zuba, you might check the contents of your kit against the parts list, just to be sure it's all there. Ours was complete, but there have been a few posts here from people who were missing parts, and if you discovered it early, you might be able to just swap kits at your local HF store. When you take the panels out, be sure to leave them out of the hot sun so the plastic covering doesn't fuse to the polycarbonate. Funnylady, three greenhouses is an inspiration! My mother looked at our HF 10x12 and said, "well, if you fill this one up, I think you'd just better stop buying plants." I wish she could see your set up! ;-) Sheri Building our Harbor Freight 10x12

tiger67, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your greenhouse, especially so quickly. Have you tried your local Craigslist, to avoid shipping? tmc2009, ours has been up almost 4 1/2 years, and we do have very strong winds routinely, for hours at a time. No wind damage at all to this point, but we did reinforce the frame, and we screwed the panels to the frame, as suggested by many posts here on GardenWeb. I documented many of those suggestions in my blog, here: Building our Harbor Freight 10x12 Greenhouse However, 80 mph winds are very severe. 80 mph winds can take down whole trees, and do roof damage to buildings that aren't engineered to withstand it. Mine has not been tested to that degree (although my guess is it's probably withstood some gusts in the 55-60mph range.) I'm not really sure how many greenhouses (of any brand) across the country could withstand 80mph. In my opinion securing the panels to the frame with screws is critical, in addition to strengthening the frame. Hello to funnylady...!

Nonetheless, it sure is tempting every year when they put those coupons out...

I am in the process of building that HFGH 10 X 12. Frame is up, panels are going in when it stops raining. Many old forums about that greenhouse, but most are old and some pictures or references come back invalid. Is it time to make an up-to-date one? I paid $650 and consider that price aa steal!
Note the instruction booklet will drive you nuts, and has some mistakes corrected in forums-search on this site for HFGH and look at the photos!

Have not been able to assemble yet because of all the snow storms. Have everything in the barn laid out and have done alot of prep work taping panel edges etc.
Have the 4x4 frame in place and then storms hit.

I paid about $480 sale price and 20% coupon.

A couple of hints I didn't find elsewhere:

I loosly pre-assembled the back wall with two corner studs, the 79 and 80 diagonals, the two 31 horizontals and two 48 clips. It was quite easy to lift that wall into position using the 79Âs as arms and it balanced as I secured the corners.
The "extra" bolts loaded into the studs are a pain to keep out of the way when securing the bottom of each stud. They are in the way and the even wedge behind the diagonal braces. A piece of tape preventing them from sliding down helps. (I am a smoker and stuffed a cigarette butt into the slot.)
A large nail slipped under the bolt helps to locate the base bolt of each stud up off the foundation so it can match the clip hole. Fingers donÂt fit between stud and the clip.
Also-poster MUDHOUSE posted that extra clips are available from HF for $10.95 (plus it cost me $7 shipping part number 29457 order only by phone 1-800-444-3353. These are necessary to adequatly secure the lexan panels against winds.

I've had the HFGH for a couple years. Ignore the instructions that come with it as they are worthless. This greenhouse needs a bit of modifying but once it's done it's a nice little greenhouse. These were the best modifications/instructions that we found. Without the extra structural support this greenhouse would be a wreck after the first strong wind. A couple people I know that didn't add the extra support had severe damage after winds under 40 mph. Mine has withstood several strong storms.
