Now the hoping begins

Last weekend I watered the roses in the little greenhouses. I checked all the pots to see if there was anything that looked like it was sprouting and didn't find a single sign of growth. This week has been up into the 40s for several days and today we hit 65. Look what I found!

This was more or less what I was expecting to see.

And not just on one or two but on several.

Now it's a matter of wait and see what the weather brings. If it doesn't get too cold I'll be OK. If it gets frigid I'll lose all of it. Either way they have to come out the beginning of April because there are plants, iris and raspberries, underneath that will be starting to come up. So the pots have to come off.

yeah! Make sure to post pictures when they bloom! I need to go back and look for the thread where you talked abut growing roses from seed. As I was doing some light pruning today, I noticed all of the wasted hips on my roses, and couldn't help but think what they may have become!

The beauty of the new roses you brought home is that they DO NOT need constant "tweaking" as the HTs do. Good pruning advice above - but don't overdo it. Relax, try leaving them alone for a while (except for water, of course). They need time to settle in and deal with growing new roots. DO NOT use HT pruning techniques on them, or as you have noticed, you will not have any bush at all left. Just let them grow for a few months, and then look at them and see what they are doing. I do not prune any of my roses except to take off dead growth, and prune a bit for shape if they are trying to block a path or the driveway, etc. One thing to keep in mind since you are in zone 9 - here in CA, you cannot rely on the size estimates of Austin or even HMF, because in warm climates many Austin roses get MUCH bigger than most sources will tell you. Do you live on the West Coast, or the humid South, or where? Local advice is best, so if you tell us what part of what state you live in, someone from there is likely to see your post and grow Austins, and then you can get more specific advice from locals who grow them near you. Good luck with them - just be patient and do not worry about having to constantly do things to them - they will be much happier left in peace. Jackie

Thanks all ... I really should post to more accurate photos. But these are the ones that made us fall in love with the house. Unfortunately the tile countertops are destroyed (hence the cutting board covering all the chips and cracks). Also, you can't tell from the photo, the cabinets are at most 20" deep (most are 18"). In the end, we are trying to keep some of the "feeling" of the original tile work to keep it consistent with the rest of the house. (Yes, we still have one original bathroom with amazing 30's tile -- and a yellow and teal combo!!) I'll be posting more pictures as the weeks progress. Until then, it looks like I'll need to try out some of the renovation cocktails on the other thread!

Amber, we paid a carpenter to assemble and install ikea cabinets in our last house. We were living on the other coast at the time. It was still less expensive than comparable quality cabinets I priced out. We are planning to have our barker cabinets assembled and installed this time too. Dh works a million hours and we have kids so I don't have time to assemble. I honestly didn't price out other options specifically this time. I suggested barker as an option to my GC who called and got numbers from barker. He's done a lot of kitchens and used to be a custom cabinetmaker and I trust him. He was impressed by the pricing. I know he was prepared to suggest alternatives if he had concerns about quality or cost. (Obviously neither of us has seen the cabinets yet so can't judge quality reliably yet--decision is based on the specifications and online reviews.). I specifically asked about ikea (which he has and will install so he's not anti-ikea) and he said the savings would be negligible and he preferred Barker's specifications.

We always combine multiple reasons to make any long distance shopping trip and when you live here everything is a long distance except for Walmart of course. There's one in just about every town. Hubby must go to Harbor Freight on a regular basis or he starts having withdrawal symptoms. I stock up on livestock items at Rural King. My problem now is I am really, really regretting not buying more of the roses they had and I just cannot justify another shopping trip so soon! If we get nice weather, by the time I could get back they will be all gone and there are some really great ones still there!

Oh.....yum. I get sooooo excited when I find that!
My tree roses ( still in garage) have leafed and budded out all over the place! Still have inches of snow cover. Can not wait to see what's under it. Congratulations, Seil

Unfortunately these aren't my seedlings. These are the potted roses in winter storage. They're already starting to leaf out and it's too soon. I do have some seedlings starting though but those are inside in the basement under lights.

That was the reason I gave up on storing pots of tender roses in the root cellar over winter. Even in complete darkness, they seem to have their own inner clock - and it wasn't set to the temperature schedule of my zone. No matter what the temps outdoors, they started growing way too early to be put out into the sun. All that early growth they pushed was wasted, every single year. I even tried to move them under the lights in the basement one year, but it's not the same as sunshine tempered by natural wind and the growth was too fragile and slim to hold up once they DID go outdoors. And then when I could finally put them outdoors safely during the day, there was the dance of in and out following the forecasts of freezing temps, which always goes on here for several weeks. That's hard to do when you work full time! I finally gave it up as just too much work. I do wish you luck though Seil!

These are outside so they do get regular sunlight. And once I pull them out of the storage wraps they're out for good no matter what. Luckily my patio is a very big expanse of concrete and stays warmer than any other part of the yard so they usually do OK. I don't do the in and out dance, lol!

Oh, good for you! Then you have the best possible set up for protecting them where they belong - outside. That's great! :-)

I just did a walk around my yard today (it was in the 60's!!! yeah!!!) and mine are looking a lot like yours :) Very excited to see some nice new leaves forming. We "should" be over the worst of winter down here, so hopefully we'll continue down this spring path!

On a funny note, I checked out my 1g pots that are on the front porch in a protected area, and there was one that seems to be crawling off the front porch...a cane about 3 feet long has escaped into the bed in front of the porch...the rose: Ralph's Creeper!! LOL Never saw a rose so perfectly named!
