The fun begins!
Comments (3)I use to have a rule that stated: No peeking at the catalogs until after Jan 1. I would put them all in a pile and just let them sit there until all the holiday stuff was over. No more. For one thing they keep arriving earlier and earlier each year. #2 I'm already sick of winter even though it hasn't officially started. Heck, a week ago I was picking lettuce in my garden and now we're covered in ice and it got down to 12 F last night. Yep, I've been reading through them each evening curled up in front of the space heater with a cup of tea. Can't help it. Kevin...See MoreWhite Walls are Done- Now the fun begins!!
Comments (33)It's such a pleasure to see you so excited about this project! So of course I have a bunch of thoughts. Three things... First, you can buy a version of the Floreat hanger at the home center, but unless it's the real thing, it will work but not as well. I've tried them all, and Floreat is far superior, in my experience. As to clearing your chair rail, if you attach a bit of lumber to the back of the top of the mirror frame to hold the top off the wall by the same dimension as the chair rail, and your hanging wire is long enough to allow for the extra space, it will hang straight. But do have somebody hold it up there to look at what sort of shadow it creates by standing proud of the wall, and see if that is a problem for you. Second...I was recommending bamboo shades, not matchstick. Matchstick blinds are great for some plans, but I think you are wanting something with a little more presence and elegance for this room...and they are completely transparent from the outside at night when your lights are on. Country Curtains used to have nice ones for a rational price, and I have found them at World Market as well. I'd choose a light natural finish, not the tortoise shell or stained versions. And third...I sense pattern and decoration creeping into your thinking! I would let your striped couch be the pattern, at least for now, and keep the chairs completely plain. Keep any prints you add very large, with clear, uncluttered images and lots of white space, both in the prints and in the mats. Take a look at the Redoute prints in the link to see what I mean about clean images and white space...then imagine them with 6 inch off-white matting and slender frames. I would choose very simple matching solid colored ceramic lamps with ivory (not yellowy-cream) silk or linen shades that let the light through. Pure, gleaming, pale color. The classic double gourd shape in cream or gray would be a good choice. But in any case, get your floor plan in place before you add anything purely decorative. And that's enough out of me for the day! Here is a link that might be useful: Redoute prints...See MoreI don't have the restraint to not post a sneak.. (Conestoga cabs)
Comments (38)Treb- Oh no, it was absolutely my fault. I saw the sample in full light so it looked much lighter. What I should have done is brought my sample they were supposed to match and compared the two. There's easily 3-4 shades difference between the two. In all honesty we were in a rush so I wanted to get it ordered and didn't take my time. Our flooring guys have been great aside from a few parts of their tiling job being poorly planned (ended up with a tiny sliver of tile on one spot, then another spot I think they could have made it look better, but again, we're rushing so I'll have to live with it). Funky and Mama Goose - Thank you!!! The ventilation slot is one of my favorite details. I couldn't justify doing a farm sink and my husband wouldn't go for me putting in an old cast iron sink with a drainboard, but still wanted something vintage!! Rdsga - So Conestoga has two different types of fancy toe kicks. There are applied ones and there are the ones like mine that are flush to the cabinet. Be warned that with the latter your cabinets have to go directly onto your floor (as opposed to cabinets first, then flooring up to the cabinets, which is common here) or you'd need shoe molding around the toe kicks. We ran into that issue and had to rush to get the flooring down. I worked with Jim from The Cabinet Joint, the way it's worded through Conestoga to do the toe kicks like I did is "shaped bottom rail". They have a few different designs you can choose from, without looking at my sheet I can't remember this profile is called but it's a standard offering. Good luck, I had a lot of fun learning their catalog! Let me know if you have other questions/need pictures! Prep Mom - Thank you!!!! I've had fun planning it all out!! Fldirt - The floors are already growing on me, so you might be right! ;) Nancy- Thank you!!!! I keep reminding myself he didn't spend the last half a year staring at cabinets. He still doesn't get the 'whole inset thing' and thinks drawers are a waste of space.. LOL I love him anyway. CPartist - My pendants and school house lights went in yesterday so I'll add pics of that. I will say, as cute as the schoolhouse lights are, they are so out of scale! When I have a chance I'll buy new shades that are bigger, since I do still like the fixture itself. But right now it looks a little funny because the windows look huge in comparison to my little dwarf lights... :D farmdrmer - I've been enjoying watching your house come together, too! We're getting closer! ;)...See MorePower tool arrived - custom cutting begins Yikes
Comments (11)I've owned a variable speed router for years and can't remember a time when I ran at less than full speed. If a table saw could speak this is what it would say: Don't worry about my blade. Keep your eyes and hand on the fence at all times. My blade isn't going anywhere, unlike the piece you're pushing through. If you let the piece drift from my fence, my blade will pick it up and throw it at your guts and my blade is doing about 200 miles per hour. It will leave purple and yellow bruises just above Mr. Happy if you're 5'9" tall. It makes a "rrreh" noise that all the other guys in the shop know they aren't supposed to be hearing. While I've got you doubled over, you may as well hit my "stop" button, pull yourself up, and walk it off like nothing happened. Unlike your wife who may take you back if you don't follow her rules, I issue non-negotiable life sentences every time....See Morecluelessincolorado
