I just received word from folks in VENTURA CO. ROSE SOCIETY that the lists of roses for auction and for sale and the online bidding rules are posted on the VCRS website (www.venturarose.org)

Online bidding and pre-emptions begin today, so looking SOONER is far better than looking LATER -- but whether you buy or not, this is a TERRIFIC educational document, and I hope everyone will take advantage of the opportunity to see roses you never knew about, and cannot buy elsewhere.

If you're attending the auction, bid, within reason, on Smokey for me. If successful, e-mail me the cost and I'll send you a check plus shipping. Are these potted or bare root? If potted, get with me regarding bare rooting it prior to shipping.

Karl, these are all potted own-roots -- in containers of various sizes.

There will be a few surprises for the silent auction. I have audited the cuttings I hoped would be more developed. These are rooted but the top growth is just beginning to develop. A limited number of Annie Laurie McDowell - Thornless, very fragrant, continuous flowering in the Los Angeles area. Quite healthy and possesses a good amount of shade tolerance. A vigorous climber once established. Silver Moon - the classic Large Flowered Climber from the early Twentieth Century. Buttery yellow buds open to semi double, silvery white fragrant blooms. One long spring flowering, though it can give scattered repeat in milder climates and it did repeat in Newhall, CA after attaining a large size. Pink Clouds - Climbing miniature created by Ralph Moore. It can be used as a hedge, specimen and is the root stock used by Sequoia Nursery to create their many miniature tree roses as well as their weeping standards. It's also the rootstock Kathy Strong stated here on Garden Web creates some of the nicest rose plants in her vast garden. R. Banksia lutescens - The single, yellow Banksia. Identical to the double yellow, only with five petal yellow flowers. Kim

Virginia -- You probably know that it takes about 10 years for the rose industry to work up from an original seedling to having material for sale. The original Jesse Hildreth mother plant nearly died this past year -- the victim of drought and cemetery management. A new Heritage Roses group has formed, to care for that plant, and the others in that cemetery, and in the town. We have actually begun to believe that the old rose may survive. For the first time in a decade or more, it was actually allowed to send up new basal shoots. This is what it looked like in 2006: See below, the old plant with a circle of new growth. At present, I can more or less count the existing plants on the fingers of one hand . . . The one in my garden. The one in the Sacramento City Cemetery. The mother plant, in the old cemetery. And what ever Jill Perry has, left over from propagating for the Heritage. No nursery has this rose. Though we surely hope one or two soon WILL. Because, you're right. It is a most extraordinary rose.

I can only agree with the remarks of both Jeri and Paul. ILC is an outstanding garden rose. The fall display of cherry tomato sized orange hips, red or mahogany canes, and foliage in chilly weather that turns purple on the undersides of the leaves while maintaining green on the upper sides all contribute to an ever-fascinating plant. While we are talking about beautiful things, I am reading 'Naming the Rose' by Roger Mann with photos by Yvonne Arnold and Paul Barden. The essays on names of roses have the kind of charm indicative of easy familiarity with all kinds of roses; the photos, especially those by Paul, are just drop-dead beautiful and would quaify as rose pornography, were there such a thing. The Arnold photographs are quite beautiful, but there is an intensity and luminosity in the Barden photos that captivates. BTW, I would urge those of you who have not yet looked at the 2009 VCRS Rose Auction Catalog to do so before it is removed from the website. Go to www.venturarose.org and scroll down to the icon. About a dozen of the fixed price sales have been pre-empted. But about a hundred remain available. Of course, all of those on the auction list remain available for bidding until this coming Friday.

The complete 2011 Ventura County Rose Auction Catalog can be viewed at www.venturarose.org. There is an egregious error in the picture with Darlow's Enigma. The picture is appropriately enough blushing red, but the description is accurate. JimD
