Best Climber for NorthEast/Coastal

Hello Friends!

Looking for a climber that is a beast! Blooms until frost or near frost in the 5 - 6 zone. Any color. I have New Dawn for 10+ years and it has been awesome! I have had others that have not been too full or soared but have bloomed on and off throughout the summer.

Any ideas I would greatly appreciate it :)

Hi! I'm brand new to roses myself and planting some climbers this year, too!

The helpful people here pointed me to Help Me Find to look up some varieties- great info over there.

Have you tried the Blaze climbers? I can't speak from any experience yet, but from what I have read it's a large, hardy, good grower. Very pretty red blooms!

Hope that helps! I'm sure some other more knowledgeable people will chime in to correct me if I am mistaken!

There are many to choose from. My own personal experience has shown that Viking Queen, Ramblin Red, Jasmania are all hardy, healthy climbers with little winter die back.

My very favorite rose is the floribunda Day Breaker. It is the only rose I have more than two of, and I have five of them. I grow 300+ roses here in northwest Missouri. It is super showy with beautiful apricot blend blooms that continually change throughout the year with various shades of pink, cream, yellow, orange,salmon, etc...the color of daybreak of course. My Day Breaker bushes bloom heavily and are continuous blooming throughout the year. The flowers are lightly scented and about 3 1/2" across. It blooms in singles and a few 3 and 4 banger sprays very occasionally mixed in. I don't usually see any thrips on my DB blooms here. The Day Breaker bush is vigorous growing to 5 1/2' tall, winter hardy (for me with no protection), disease resistant, and well shaped without having to prune it that way. The foliage is medium sized, dark green, and very shiny. I love this rose and if it can handle your winters would highly recommend it to you. It was an ARS winner a few years ago which generally means that it can be grown in many different zones across the US dependably. I don't use any winter protection at all on my roses and it survives easily and is one of the first to break dormancy and begin blooming in Spring and lasts until December most years before going dormant for the winter. It may survive your winters with good added protection but I couldn't guarantee it since I don't live there of course. Some other very winter hardy roses for me are Pop Warner, Savoy Hotel, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Vavoom. These could possibly grow for you also with good added winter protection. These roses are such that I don't have to prune off winter kill from them because they handle winter so well here with no protection. Good luck, John

I went out yesterday with the camera to see how the rose blooms had done after four or five days of drizzle, cold and rain. Not many of the roses are blooming, but these I thought had done really well and still looked good. More rain is forecast so I'll check again later. Clair Matin Heritage Marie Pavie Portland from Glendora Lauren Madame Alfred Carriere Excellenz von Schubert (I agree about this rose, Diane) Polareis Duplex Verde Cornelia Till Uhlenspiegel, a hybrid rubiginosa In worst shape was the floribunda, Blue for You. A little bedraggled was Baptiste La Faye, but not really too bad. Faith Whittlesey was in pretty good shape, as was Wasagaming. Overall, these roses seem to be good for my mild climate, wet gardening area. I hope the GH does well for you, Diane. Keep us posted! I wonder if Cl. Le Vesuve would do well for you. I have the bush form and it is so floriferous and wonderful that I bought two more after having the first for a while. Not much fragrance but one of my best bloomers. I don't know if the same would be true for the climber but I believe Sherry has one, but don't know how mature it is. Ingrid

I live in Palos Verdes next to Redondo Beach. My old house was 1.5 miles to the ocean. The best roses for me in my modern rose garden were: Sexy Rexy Honey Perfume Mellow Yellow Trumpeter Olympiad Mr. Lincoln Double Delight Sunsprite French Perfume Gemini Iceberg Shovel pruned in my old garden: Cherry Parfait -- rust, rust, rust Cl. New Dawn -- Mildew, mildew, mildew Peace -- no, nada, zip ability to bloom continuously Just went to the South Coast botanical gardens in Palos Verdes which is about 3 miles to the ocean. They have pics of all the roses they grow on their website. Just this December 20th the best looking roses in their gardens were: Mardi Gras Midas Touch Fourth of July Passionate Kisses Barone Prevost Sun Flare Mrs. R. M. Finch Lady Elsie May Molineux Julia Child Just bought a new house last August 1 mile from the ocean. Hi Chantal

If you want beast that blooms consistently through the summer and laughs off winter in the 5-6 border and well beyond, my vote is for either Quadra or Illusion. Both are crimson-red colors (garden translation - darkish pink), and are no care, no spray, hardy, and long-blooming. Like most roses, they'll rest a bit between bigger flushes but are never entirely without blooms through frost. Both are also thorny puppies when mature, able to give New Dawn a good fight for survival and worth being cautious pruning around them. If you can handle the thuggishness of New Dawn, these would be good to try.

Hi All Thanks for the suggestions! Yes AviaStar I use HelpMeFine -it is an awesome resource. :) I just wanted to hear from some others here what they have been successful with then I will check the look of the Roses on that site. You probably found Roses are addictive!!! What is on your list this year? :)

OneWheeler and Nipstress I will check out those Roses. I am also thinking about a white climber too! :)

AviaStar I had JC and he is a Beautiful Rose!!! Hmm I don't think ND is that thorny but I guess that is where you are going to put it. I had it in a our Moon Garden but moved it to another spot an area on a walkway to our basement. I gave it a hard prune because I moved it. I like the way it starts out pink bud and open to white - delicate but a strong rose even with neglect. Try it :)
