Red canes vs. Green canes?

What does it mean when new canes come out red versus those that come out green from the get-go? I can't tell if it's just based on the type/cultivar of rose or not.

Any insight?

Generally all new rose growth is red and matures green, regardless of cultivator/type of rose. this is completely normal

Well, not ALL new growth is red or reddish. It depends upon the specific genetics of the involved roses. Some are quite red while others are green, yellow-green, even blue-green. Julia's Rose traditionally expresses reddish new growth. I discovered, isolated and registered a golden mustard toned sport of it years ago which I named Golden Julia. It was as if all plant parts lost the gene for red/pink. Golden Julia's new growth is yellow green. Its flower color is as if the "copper and parchment" lost the pink. So, just as some of us have blond hair, black, brown or red hair, some roses have new growth which is redder while others have less to no red. It's normal. And, as was stated, some are quite reddish but lose those tones as the foliage matures. These three seedlings are from the same cross (same parents) raised last year. It all depends upon which genes the plant inherits.

Then, this seedling (different parents) started rather purple-green, then turned quite red with the colder weather. It isn't deciduous, so the red leaves aren't falling, but returning to their green growing look. Kim

I have heard of people in Vancouver WA getting downy mildew, but the consensus here is that it's being imported on new roses brought in from the growers in SoCal - Weeks, JnP, etc. It first appears on new roses, then spreads to the rest of the garden from there, if it shows up at all. That was a few years ago when there was a serious outbreak of DM in the SoCal growing fields due to an incredibly wet winter down there - they got all the rain we were supposed to get, several times their normal yearly total, where we had a very dry winter. I think the big growers have a better handle on the DM now. I've been growing roses on the West Coast for 20 years and the only time I've seen DM 'in the flesh' is when I visited my aunt in New York State. Blackspot, on the other hand, is ubiquitous and long established here in western WA, but almost unknown in CA. I've used Banner Maxx and I love it. Not that I love chemicals but this one works really well on blackspot and with a long spray interval too. When the roses leaf out it'll be easy to tell BS from DM. BS spots are circular, black, with feathery margins, and a yellow halo. It starts at the bottom of the bush and slowly works its way up. DM spots are also black but angular, stopping at leaf veins, and it starts at the top of the bush and very quickly works its way down to defoliate the whole bush within weeks, where BS might take months and only defoliate the bottom half of the bush. It'll be getting on time to fertilize your roses in Vancouver soon. I feed mine when they have 4" of new growth on them. Haven't even pruned them yet up here in Oly but we're in a whole different climate zone from Vancouver, much colder and wetter with a later spring. Colder than both Vancouvers, the one to the south AND the one to the north in Canada! Your roses will need extra time and TLC to recover from being moved in the middle of summer. They need to grow new roots to replace the ones lost in the move.

hi, mehearty, I hope this is not too obnoxious/rude to add my questions to your post. But I too have questions /concerns about the brown canes... I had one damaged tree rose branch that unlike the other black frost burn spots on my other tree rose branches had seemed to spread? rot? and wondered if you had this same problem? and wondered if cherriej and veilchen had any comments at this... There used to be a lot of green in the branch in spite of the damage, 2/3 green but the upper 1/3 black... I had hopes for it because of the green but then one day, much too my horror it had spread down to 1/3 black and 1/3 a yucky brown with only a bare 1/3 green left...the brown was so close to a new emerging bud that I panicked and cut it off...The part still remaining was very healthy white and green outer shell, but I made one cut then took it away and made several (investigative) cross-section "autopsies" of the removed branch. The upper black was black on outside but ash-white on inside, but the brown areas were yucky brown on outside with slight juice but yucky sallow center on the inside... Did I cut out a diseased stem...or did I jump the gun too soon. Was your brown like mine in terms of spreading downward? Thanks and much apologies if I'm being rude... I'm a total beginner gardener (never grew anything in my life except for a beautiful orchid)...and in March bought two tree roses that got snowballed and iced (poor tree roses).

I saw this article also and got excited to think that maybe more types of bamboo would be available at a lower price. But I went to their website and searched for all the bamboo and most of what they are tissue-cloning is best for the Northwest and not my Zone 10 Southeast. Guess I'll have to keep looking for bamboo the way I have been, nursery by nursery.

Probably means it's a darker colored rose. There is more pigment in both the stems and the blooms and the two traits are linked (as you would expect them to be).

It's completely normal to have variation between varieties. If, however,you have two of the same variety and one has stems that are red-green and the other yellow-green, then the lighter green one is not getting enough sun.

We have what I believe is a climbing rose that stands about 15' high. Most of the blooms occur at the very top. I'm wondering if I should prune it back by about half way so the roses are more eye level? I'm a complete rose novice, so I'm not sure if that would be bad for the plant or not.

In the photo (linked below), the rose is mixed in with a jasmine plant in the front and a huge blackberry bush in the back, behind the fence.
