Winterizing fountain in texas?

Hi,

I have a nice big concrete above-ground fountain that will be going through it's first winter.

It's very large, thus can't be moved, unfortunately. The liner where the main body of water is a fiberglass type liner. The rest of the fountain, and the "mountain" the water that's pumped up runs down is a cast concrete type deal.

I live in the Dallas/Ft Worth area, and I'm curious as to what I should do with my fountain for the winter?

Just remove the pump..............you have any fish in it?

No fish.

Just a fountain..

Do I need to remove the water? Should I cover it up?

I would...remove pump, remove water (so it doesn't split the plastic when frozen), fill with sand or other scoopable/vacuumable heavy material to prevent the collapse of the box, then cover the box to prevent water accumulation. Or, replace the buried box with a glazed basin and bring the whole shebang in the house for winter enjoyment.

I have found out over the years that all resin is not created equal. I have some that I paid a bigger price for but it has been outside year round several years & still looks great. On the other hand, I have some that split the first winter. I would not chance it if I were you. Seems to me that the resin that has a solfter feel is what holds up better.....by softer feel I mean it is smoother. Betty

I found this site because I also was looking for information about winterizing our small 1/2 barrel fountain garden. We are in zone 6, and our winter temps are pretty unpredictable. I thought we should empty our fountain for the winter months, but after reading the above posts, I'm not sure. I'd love not to, but I'd also hate to have it freeze and break. What are your thoughts for zone 6 and this size fountain garden. The birds love to drink from it, and since we do empty our birdbath for the winter, this would be a great source of winter water for the birds, if we could keep it up and running. But again, I don't want to risk the fountain or the barrel itself, by leaving water in it all winter.

1) WOW martie, no fair!! looks like you're in the PNW with that grass height!! 2) deanne, I can't believe you had success with that method- it seems so harsh, washing the soil off and repotting! but i'm agonna try it, without the dividing, and under lights. 3) i'm gonna try martie's sunlight method too. i spend easily $100 on these ev. yr and place them throughout the gardens, so overwintering success would be invaluable! 4)lisasha- when you bring in your cannas, just put the whole clump, or pieces, in a bin or milkcrate and stick in the basement in the dark like dahlias. this is my new method, after i bothered with peat moss bins for yrs and warren leach explained this no-fuss way, which worked great for me last yr. best, mindy

As long as there is no glazed ceramic on it, I doubt covering is needed. My concrete birdbath does not crack. You might empty the water onto your garden so it doesn't go stagnant. I would think that fallen leaves in standing water could discolor the fiberglass.

So you think dumping the water and removing the pump is sufficient?

I dont need to cover up any of the places that could catch water when it rains?

When I lived in Texas the winter temps hovered around 60oF but that was east Texas. I don't remember Dallas/Ft.Worth getting any freezing temps but I'm old and it's been a long time. If you expect to get temperatures that get down to freezing and the fountain has fancy work, you might want to cover it with some sheets of contractors plastic held down with Duct tape or Duck tape, if you prefer. That is just to keep it dry. Wet material is cracked by the freezing and thawing of water in the material itself because the water expands and contracts. Sandy
