I would agree, the Secret Garden rose in your Secret Garden. The scent is wonderful and in an enclosure the scent will be intensified. Besides, it makes a wonderful visual pun. No one else will get it, but you will. I used to grow thyme around my sundial, and that made me smile.

It is true that GH is a superb rose in the arid west, magnificent, healthy, and fragrant. Perhaps you could make room for them both. Best of both worlds?

Buff Beauty is a favorite of mine, but while it does repeat, it cycles more slowly than the other two. I get an excellent spring flush, one decent later repeat, and scattered bloom from my established Buff Beauty. Perhaps it is different on fortuniana. Most of my roses (including BB) are own root.

My only concern about Secret Garden Musk Climber for this use is that it is a very LARGE rose.

We have used it as the gateway to our own "Secret Garden," placed outside our kitchen and bedroom. To make this, we used a large "arbor" or archway with a gate in it. But we added a panel trellis to each side of that, to accommodate this large, bushy climber.

Behind this "wall of rose," smaller plants grow in a hidden shade-garden. But they are for the most part smaller plants -- and none of them are prickly -- where SGMC is definitely prickly.

Just a thought, having grown both roses for more years than most, and knowing them intimately.

Oh my, I should have mentioned before that the planting area does get shade especially in the winter. SGM looks to be much too large to keep up with pruning, though the description and pics on HMF look lovely. I confess I've lusted for GH for years, but am not familiar with HP's. Can GH grow successfully in partial shade? Thanks for your input! Linda

How closely does 'Secret Garden Musk Climber' resemble Rosa moschata? I grow and love the second rose. Given their sizes and space requirements, I have always thought that the two of them were similar enough that I probably did not need both. Of course, R moschata cannot be grown where winters are severe, which is not the case in the SF Bay Area. I guess I have imagined SGMC as a sort of hardier version of R moschata. Perhaps I am mistaken.

My suggestion was going to be Grandmother's Hat until I remembered how badly the blooms did in my garden when I had it. They just simply didn't last. However, I have much heat reflecting off rocks and that might have been the problem. If it does well in other arid areas then it must just be my garden. I will forever regret not being able to grow this rose.

Portland from Glendora does really well for me in the shade (others seem to agree on HMF). It's very, very fragrant, repeats well, and is about the size you want or a little bigger (depending on how enthusiastic it is about garden conditions). Nice clean, abundant foliage too.

Reine des Violettes does well in shade. She's mucho fragrant and thornless too. Another you might want to look at is Sidonie. She's similar to Glendora but a lighter color. Mine is doing well in partial shade.

I also really like Grandmother's Hat. Mine is just a wee slip of a thing as she arrived only recently, but when I've seen her full grown, what a lovely plant. Very versatile. Excellent scent.

I'm growing Grandmother's Hat in a partially shaded area of my yard and it is doing very well. However, I've only had it in for a little more than a year so it hasn't bloomed too much yet. It is very healthy and I like it a lot.

Buff Beauty is a wonderfully fragrant rose and I love it but it doesn't seem to bloom as regularly as I would like. I don't think Hybrid Musks particularly love our climate but some do ok. I planted Prosperity this past winter and it's doing very well. It was beautiful at the local rose garden tour this past fall.

In a "Secret" garden I would probably opt for something not overly endowed with prickles. In a partially shaded area, I suspect your experience will match Jaspers.

Some of our GramHats do grow in partial shade, and at least one is now radically overshadowed by an avocado seedling. That one's foliage is less full, but he is blooming merrily.

If you are talking about partial shade, your experience should not be the same as Ingrid's.

I'd suggest 'Mutabilis,' as well, but it also grows to be a very very large plant, and I think that would not be desirable in this situation. But you might look at some of the Polyanthas, or Poly-teas, for inspiration.

Oh, Rosefolly! Thyme around your sundial - that makes my day! Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle...

Since Jeri mentioned polyanthas, my Aunt Margy's Rose, which I grow against a wall, has reached six feet. The blooms are old-fashioned and lavender, with a lovely fragrance, even though the blooms are 1 1/2 inches at the most. Very nice foliage, and no disease to speak of in my climate. I got mine at Rogue Valley Roses.

I second Ingrid's suggestion of Aunt Margy's rose, which I bought on her recommendation. It is very healthy, blooms and blooms and blooms. It is climbing on a trellis in my side yard and is one of my favorite roses. I love the smallish blooms, she's a delicate but strong rose.

Felicia is a highly fragrant Hybrid Musk, repeats well for me here. (I'm not in your zone, might grow large in your area.)

Garden Grown, if you like the idea of the name but the SGMC plant is too large, you might consider Secret Garden Noisette. I actually know nothing about this rose other than the facts that it is another Joyce Demits-Virginia Hopper discovery; that it came from the same garden as the Secret Garden Musk Climber; and that it is said to be quite fragrant.

-- I know of it only that it is said to be another of the many found Blush Noisette sports that decorate our gardens -- but I also know that those vary in habit and size, from the dwarf "Roseville Noisette" to the majestic "Setzer Noisette," and I have not discussed SGN with Joyce.
