Anyone do their own transport of granite countertops?
Comments (1)Slabs are VERY VERY heavy. Installers usually use a trailer or truck with an a frame and haul the slab on edge. Definately don't lay it flat. If you can build an A frame support and lay your hands on lots of moving blankets, ratchet strapping, and large guy extra help, then consider it. Otherwise, leave it to the professionals....See MoreHow big of a deal is a granite seam?
Comments (8)I didn't realize there was a similar thread when I posted mine! I was also asking if anyone has heard of a new technique where they join the seams at the fabricator's under high pressure and then top polish. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg0522394128918.html?9 Personally, I think it depends. I would not never say that seams are no big deal - for one thing all seams are not created equally. In my case, I know there is no way I'd be happy with an average seam in my location and taking into account the fact that the seam would be facing right into the most visible part of the room as the focal point. The skill of the fabricator is not only in the size of the seam, but in the ability to match the pattern of the movement. The type of granite makes a difference, too - I agree that something with a more homogenous pattern tends to hide a seam better....See MoreTips for transporting a kitchen - cabinets / granite
Comments (8)Building an A-frame is probably your best bet but it takes up a lot of space. I would consider building a wooden slatted box for the granite to sit in . I would wrap the granite in moving blankets and strap the box tightly to the side of the truck with moving straps. A piece of foam between the granite and the side of the truck for cushioning. Important: the granite needs to ride upright on its edges - do not ride it flat. It needs to be well cushioned and not move. As far as the cabinets go, wrap them in moving blankets and you should be perfectly okay. They should all ride upright also (not on their sides). Make sure they are secured in a way that prevents them from moving around I don't think it would be a problem to stack light boxes on top of the cabinets. Make sure you rent an air ride truck. Comments (14)We have the same issue in our front yard and believe it is gravel put there by the builder. I can't dig in any one spot without hitting the gravel and when I planted a vitex tree a couple of years ago I removed a bucket full of the small rocks in a 3'-wide area. In our case this area is what is known as the "bathtub" part of the yard where water runs in and may stagnate. There is a slight slope that runs down toward our home, so they probably poured the gravel down there to help it drain. It was no doubt compacted by construction machinery also. Despite those attempts this area is still soggy and in early spring is full of slime mold, so the gravel didn't even do what it was intended to do and makes planting any groundcovers very difficult. We put in a drainage tile that helped a lot with the water. The weeds, of course, love this spot. Is your area in full sun? Ours is in part shade which creates added problems because Bermuda does not tolerate much shade. Instead we have lots of moisture loving, shade loving weeds. If you have the sun that is what is giving your turf a fighting chance though the gravel being there will prevent it from really thriving....See Morejugglerguy
