Watching waiting for water to boil / sigh

I'm so excited with this year, after loosing 200 roses and starting over the ones I do have left in the bed that lived threw my neglect which I'm not all to blame for really. Thank god I always was such a strictler for try to maintain roses names in a book and tried to make so tags were near them and often bury them to try to prevent fading. Anyway I was working on this bed with my survivors and comparing them to my last book I documented names and places of roses. Well you know how there are roses you own you just know their name and the way they look and how they grow. Well all the roses in bed were properly marked because even dead ones when found there tag when preparing for the soon new matched what I had written. But this one......... I could put money on it that it was La Marne but in my book is written Le Pactole! Well she has a bud already on her so I'm just patiently waiting. And thinking my books gonna be right because I know La Marne had habit of being a show off and one bud doesn't sound like La Marne.

So its like waiting for water to boil, I'm just so excited to be back to growing roses. 3 of the very few roses I have left have buds on them, that one, and sunset, and Duchess.

Anyway just wanted to share I'm so antsy for more growth and to see my garden look wonderful again!

I will try to make this long story short. I owned with mortgage of corse 7.8 acres, I originally wanted the 10 acres aside of me but it already had owners 6mo before I got mine. Well when those owners left and let there place go I got a chance to get my hands on it. To do that I had to go back to work and school. I had 6 kids at the time sooo.. I was leaving house 6 am and lucky if I rolled in by midnight. Then I got a buyer for my original place. So about 60 of those roses were babies I rooted from trades from friends on here. The rest had to be dug up and put in pots. So I lost a lot in the move and then a lot from neglect because black nursery pots in Florida heat even in shade just doesn't go well. So I got my 10 acres and no mortgage now but I paid the price with my roses, because I just didn't juggle enough to tend to them properly.

So all is settled and now I get to yet again have my passion back. That believe me I will have to be unable to even move before I endure that loss again. It hurts sometimes looking at rose sites knowing I owned certain roses and they are gone. Don't get me wrong either there was other life things that happened to that ment me also neglecting them more like loosing mom and traveling to Pa couple times to see her then to say my final goodbyes.

Life lessons learned right!!

Beware!!! i got those by buying food in walmart .you can get them enywhere you buy food expecially pet food. check packages before purchacing . if you see web or larve dont buy it. I have eliminated successfully the indian moth . by trowing away every open and anything that showed sign of contamination . sprayed interior out and toop of my cabinet with flying incest killer . then 24 hour later i cleaned every single cabinet with bleach and dish soap. then placed in containers the good food and wiped clean cans with alcohol. then 3 days later placed everything back in the cabinets and placed a lavender leaf in cabinet also you can use moht balls to repel them. after that even if you see 3 or 4 flying around. kill them for peace of mind but after they dont find more food they will not lay eggs cause larva will starve to death.

Some interesting info. I usually just use the coffeemaker for hot, albeit not boiling water. I bought an electric kettle and having been thinking a lot lately about trying it. Had it here a couple years now and never had a reason to use it. The last time I roughly timed it I think it was about 4 1/2 minutes to get a pot of water heated up in my old $10 Proctor Silex dripper. That was about 10 of their "cups". I'm not sure if that's actually a true measuring cup of water. Seems to me the coffee producers figure 6oz as a coffee cup, although now that I think of it, I doubt that a full "12 cup" measure on there is over a half gallon! Need to do some measuring! Anyway I guessed it was faster than the stove heating up (this was when I had that Corning topped stove) and probably faster than the microwave from what I remembered when I tried it before. I don't usually have to pull the lid to see if it's boiling, especially when I'm using a glass lid! And even with the others, I can see the steam start coming out and hear when it gets to a simmer and I know a boil ain't far behind. I've been so intrigued with induction since I first heard about them. I know several people who are using the single unit induction units and no complaints from them I never thought about the black vs white pan for heat loss. Interesting. And of course I prefer black to white cookware. Oh well, not that big a thing anyway I'm sure. Annie, Annie, Annie... I thought you were a cast iron only lady! :)

amck : I am glad you are OK...wow a tornado I had not heard. Please do post DH doin' his thing !! The recipe inst. weren't too clear ( Pinot Grigio interfered:) ! He minced up a couple garlic cloves and thinly sliced 1/2 an onion. 20 shrimp thawed and peeled and soak in some salty/sweet water...it makes them moister and they taste really good. A goodsized handful of fresh basil shredded, a handful of chives chopped , about 1 1/2c of the roasted tomatoes. Then you put a hefty glug of EVOO and a TBsp or so of butter and melt together. saute the vegs 1st to sweat them then add the shrimp and the white wine...about 3/4 c. Simmer pretty fast to reduce and cook the shrimp. The sauce and the shrimp should both be ready at the same time toss in 1/2 of basil and serve over cooked pasta. Sprinkle on the rest of the basil and the grated parmesan. eandhl: thank you it is "by the seat of the pants !) How much will you pay ??? neesie : thank you I had not seen that site...it is great. Maybe your DH and MN's can get together ! MN have a great time...where are you going ? I have not seen this aspect discussed, but I think you can see it is worth considering. Fact #1 - Atmospheric pressure is 14.7 lbs per sq. in. Fact #2 - When two surface are pushed together, to pull apart, you will need to work against the 14.7 lbs/sq. in. force. That's how a suction cup works. You can use suction cups to lift very heavy loads or to climb a building. Fact #3 - to make a suction cup work better, you wet the cups a little. The water film prevents air from getting in between the two surface to equalize the atmospheric pressure. Fact #4 - If water between the two surfaces gets thicker, then the water becomes a lubricant and helps to release the two surfaces from air pressure. -------------------------------------- When you boil an egg, you can see tiny bubbles coming out from the egg shell, because the shell have many microscopic holes. Air expands and escape from these holes. When the air is cooled, air shrinks and draws water inside the egg thru the holes. The water will create the suction cup effect and atmospheric pressure of 14.7 lbs will push the membrane against the egg white. If enough water gets in between the membrane and egg white, then the water will help to counter act the air pressure and the membrane can slide off the white easier. That's how I can easily peel eggs and quail eggs to make deviled quail eggs, by using the laws of physics. dcarch

My condolences on the loss of your mother.
My experiences is that I feel plant losses until the next plants come along, and then I'm happy again. When I moved to Italy I left behind a good garden I'd been working on for eight years. I missed it until I got my present garden well started, and then I no longer missed it.
Here it's snowing--March so far has been much more wintry than February was--but the weather's supposed to begin improving today, with the precipitation ending and temperatures rising. A good thing, because I have to finish pruning my wisteria, and try to get 'Treasure Trove' and R. longicuspis back up in the trees they're supposed to climb. There are still a few roses left to prune, but that task isn't urgent. Still, spring is on the way.
Your rose project sounds great: good luck! And of course, don't forget to get some plants in your garden that you'll enjoy when the roses aren't in bloom.
