When to bring potted roses out of the shed?

I have three potted roses in my shed. They look great still with lots of green cane remaining. Ones a Pretty Jessica and two Sleeping Beauty minis. When should I bring them back out?

Bring them out now on days above freezing so new growth isn't all yellow. Leave them out on nights above freezing. Doing this lets them acclimate to the sun and outdoors so they don't get shocked when finally brought out. I find placing and leaving them in a wagon to wheel them back and forth makes it easier.
Don't know about your temps but mine are getting above freezing most days but fall back to the low 20s at night. I've removed some overwintered cutting from the cold frame and repotted them. I leave then out on a shelf in my unheated greenhouse where night temps fall close to outside. They haven't lost any foliage and remain looking good. Spring time foliage contains natural sugars that act as an antifreeze.

Ah, ok thanks karl! I don't have a wagon or anything but I'm sure I can devise something to get them in and out for a while yet.

I'm hoping that someone in your zone or familiar with your winters will answer definitively for you, but in my zone it is not necessary to bring the pots in over winter. I've left the pots out over winter for many many years now and with few exceptions have had remarkable success. The few exceptions have been minis in small pots. If you leave them outside you should try and keep them out of direct contact with the cold north wind, and up against a sheltered outside wall that will radiate heat at night. If you choose to take them inside, then wait until the leaves have dropped to bring them in. It saves on the mess in the garage. You shouldn't have to do anything about moving them inside until the temperatures have dropped consistantly down into the 20's. Water sparingly, as you need to keep them dormant inside as long as possible and aside from that, too much water can lead to root rot.

It will survive if brought into an unheated garage or shed and kept away from a light source. It must be watered once in awhile but it will be dormant so it shouldn't be too wet. If you have a sunroom that stays cool and other plants thrive in during winter, it may be OK there. Roses are not indoor plants and the dry heated winter air inside a home can spell disaster for a rose bush. BTW, the number after crisx (crisx 8) should be your zone. At first look I wondered why you would want to bring a rose bush into the house in zone 8. You might consider changing it to crisx 4 to avoid confusion.

Apparently my roses never got that memo about mulch. The thing to remember about most modern tea rose descendants is that they are much more susceptible to drought dormancy than cold dormancy. In other words, they have to be hit over the head with a very large hammer before they get the idea that winter is coming. They aren't dormant yet because it just plain hasn't gotten cold enough yet. In the future, you could experiment with less water in the fall, but that isn't something I've been in a position to do. Fall is often very wet here, and the only way to cut back on the water is to move them under cover, which would keep them too warm for too long. Whether or not you wait for them to go dormant depends on how many times you are willing to move them. My largest pots are still fairly mobile with the help of a handcart. So in a fairly typical year, they will go in and out about three times before they finally stay in for the winter. They come in when the nighttime lows are around 20, and go back out when the forecast is for nothing below freezing.

I don't have a shed but I do overwinter potted HTs, teas, camellias and RCs and seedlings of various plants in our garage. It works out fine, but you must water every 2 weeks; or at least check the dampness of the pot soils every 2w. If your shed gets hot some days, as my garage does, just open the door and the temp will drop (but don't forget to close it up for the night). You don't need or really even want to do the in/out routine with your potted plants thru the winter months; not until Spring and the chance of late freezes has passed. But without fail, once you decide that the risk has passed and pull all of your roses out of the garage or shed, a few days later you'll get an unexpected temp drop forecast. Be VERY CAREFUL during this dormant-to-awakening transition. During this phase the plants are at their most vulnerable. Plants that survive a plunge to 0 degrees in January while fully dormant will drop like flies if exposed to a plunge from 50 to 25 degrees in April. Really its pretty easy, just resist the urge to bring them out too early. I'm always raring to go by the end of March, but its too early to move the potted roses from their shelter. I busy myself in the garden for about 3 weeks--pruning, composting, etc--and when thats done, late April, then I bring out the pots. And when I do, I keep them close to the house for a couple of weeks. The house will shield them from wind and provide a degree or two of warmth that they would not have if exposed.

Geez I wish I had that few! My entire garage, except for a path, are roses. By the time I got them outside it would be time to get them back in. I'll wait until a rainy day in early April to get them out, although I am noticing a little growth on some of my cuttings from last summer.....

I brought one of mine out, The Fairy, that was breaking dormancy and she's staying out now, even when there's frosts. As long as it doesn't go below 25. She'll have to take it or leave it. I also brought out a still dormant (or dead) rugosa... it will stay out. I have a tree rose that I'm still undecided about, annoyed at the task of having to bring back in at frosts. But it's getting more leafy.. It was Interesting to hear about the spring foliage/antifreeze nature. Good luck!!

I'm thinking of throwing a blanket on them at nights when it gets to the lower 20's. I wonder if this will do the trick? Two of them I can carry in if need be but one is way too heavy.
