Hi, Thorn grower, that is what so cool about early yellows. All my other roses are just stick too, didn't even start to leaf out yet, just some swallen leaf buds. Oriental yellow roses allow to start rose season more then a month earlier. Spinossimas will follow them.

I do hope it stays mild, I would hate for it to get cold again, ESPECIALLY since everything is starting to bud out. I think we can expect leaves within the next three weeks, I reckon. Defintely catkins on the willows soon.

Duchesse de Montebello never wanted to loose her leaves though, she was half-evergreen!

That is wonderful Olga. I smile every time I walk by the canary bird you gave me last weekend, I am so happy to have this rose in my yard. My hugonis is starting to leaf out, but I do not see any buds.

Wow, I hope you'll be able to take some pictures for us when they open! I just planted bare-root Rosa primula and R. hugonis where I work yesterday (along with a few others), so with luck in a year or two they'll be out there for everyone to see and be inspired by. I hope the R. primula will be one with good leaf scent. Where did you get yours from, Olga?

I have two Canary Birds (this is my favorite of all), one from pickering and one from Hortico. Pickering doesn't ofer it anymore, but Hortico ships really good ones. I already bought CBs for many of my friends from them. I like this rose so much and feel it is so bad it is not availavle in US. I am expecting one more next week. If you are interested I can donate it to you for planting at your work. Just let me know.
My Primula is from Pickering, it doesn't have scented leaves blooms are less fragrant and bloom time is much shorter then with CB.
My Hugonis is own root and I don't quite remember where I got it probably High Contry Roses. I love this one, but my problem is that blooms fully open only during the day when I am at work. In the morning and evening they are partially closed. So I can fully enjoy them only on weekends.
Cantabrigiensis is from Pickering and it is too yong to judge, just one year old.

Thank you so much for mentioning where they all came from, Olga! Too bad Pickering sells an unscented R. primula - that is where ours came from. I asked my supervisor to order one from Hortico and she did (I know that their clone has/had highly scented foliage) but although it was promised to be sent repeatedly, it has not arrived in two years and we've given up hope that the order will ever be honored. The arboretum can accept donations, though I don't personally have the ability to solicit them; I'd be happy to pass along an offer to donate material to the appropriate people if you decide you'd like to.

Stefan, LOL. I probably just used the wrong word. What I meant is to just "give" it to you as a present. From that point it is yours and you can do whatever you want with it. Will it work? I also got Primula from Hortico, it is tiny, but you can have it too. By all means I don't want it to be official, but if it is the only way... I would prefer the simple person to person way, I saw your birthday is coming next month. Can it be an early Birthday present? :)
Primula ia already here soaking and CB according to Hortico was shipped last week, I didn't get it yet, but if everything is right, it should be here by midweek.
It will be my pleasure to share these beauties with other people.

Olga, that's very generous of you, and I'd be a fool to turn down such a lovely gift (but don't you want a nicely scented R. primula for your own garden?). I really don't know why Hortico still hasn't sent us ours since they obviously must have them available...

I really wanted to have scented Primula and that is why I ordered it. But yesterday I was trying to find a space where to put it and it is just impossible to find reasonable space in my really small yard already packed with 150 roses. So I made a decision to give it away, and to give it away to a place where more people can enjoy it would make me feel good. So don't think about it, just take it.
Send me an e-mail, and as soon as I have CB here I will e-mail you back and we can arrange the transition :)

I, for one, can't wait to see photo's. I've always wanted a Father Hugonis but after reading what your experience has been, I think if I have to choose one it would be Canary Bird. The problem is that I have had horrible experiences with Hortico and hesitate to order from them!
