goldfish question

One of my wakin, the reddest & biggest of the 3, has black spots. I noticed one on the back looks like dirt or a small piece of debris stuck to it ... when I netted it to look I noticed a few more on the side. It (the spot) didn't move & when I tried to wipe it off I couldn't feel it. It almost looked like it was under the scale, if the scales are clear ... if the scales aren't clear then it would be coloration on the scale.

The water is pretty chilly to the touch, haven't taken the temp will tomorrow ... it's 9 at night now, the pond is mostly shade some indirect light. Could the cooling (it's been getting quite chilly here, especially at night) be causing some color change or could it be some sort of parasite?

I haven't seen any flashing from any of them & I watch them alot ... they're new & so cool looking.

It's a new pond I dug just for these 3 fish ... they're the only fish in it with a few plants.

I don't think I could get pics of it but I can try tomorrow.

The black spot on the back looks like pepper ... like a spec of pepper.

If it's a new pond the black spots could be from ammonia burn, stress from the move or a small injury or just coloration that hasn't changed yet. Check your water parameters ammonia burns will cause black spots on fish. Baby goldfish are black then change color as they get older. I have wakins as well but were not babies when I got them so don't know if wakins are black when they are young.

I think the idea you have of putting them out in a tub would work fine and would be better than the floating bag. You should probably quarantine them for a couple of weeks first, though. Outdoor fish are at their weakest in the spring and more prone to catching bacterial and fungal infections, so you need to be especially careful when you add anything to the pond right now. That will also give you more time to make sure your remaining fish are healthy.

You are having a perfect setup for your goldfish & you need not worry about your lionhead if he has developed some sort of extra bubble or sack in front of his eye.They are not a goldfish health problem.The sacks occur because of genetics. Not because of a goldfish disease. your lionhead must be a cross of "Bubble eye"(a type of goldfish). You just enjoy watching your lionhead evolve into a new fish.... NOTE:The bubble under the eye should not be confused with "pop eye" where the eyeball of the goldfish protrudes from the head. Pop Eye is a serious goldfish disease caused by a bacterial infection and must be treated with antibiotics at once.

Goldfish are difficult to sex unless mature and in breeding condition. It is possible that the presence of veins is an indication of a bacterial infection. But then again, the cultivars can give the impression of a problem and it is only a part of the intended phenotype. for instance, there are very obese goldfish, looking like they have dropsy - but are perfectly fine.

I think your columnea will do much better in a light soil. You can pot it and put it in a ziplock baggie out of direct sun. After it will start growing - keep taking tips off and sticking back in the same pot so you will develop a bushier plant. African Violets do root in water, but a lot of gesneriads will rot. Another easy to grow geseriad that some people call Goldfish - Nemathantus - is very happy to root in soil - but will refuse to do it in water. Offtopic: Funny about these common names - - in Lowe's hardware I saw a nice annual looking plant with tubular orange flowers which was named Cornucopia and was refered as a hummigbird attraction. Why it was labeled Cornucopia - is beyond my understanding. I was able to track it by the hummingbird thing - and it is Cuphea ignea, or "cigar plant". Good luck with your columnea, they are lovely, keep it on the eastern or western window, they like to be on a cool side to bloom - and try more than one variety. Some are practically everblooming. Could losing some of their slime coat cause this? Like when you handle them.

I'll check water tomorrow as well.

Missa, I had problems with one of my fish in the past and Rick at Goldfish Connection told me they were signs of healing. Mine went away after awhile. Hope yours do too. Glenda

Ok ... the water temp seems to be 68 degrees.

Now I tested the water, all I have is ph, nitrate, nitrite & ammonia .... it's kind of hard to match the colors on the card but it looks like the ph is 7.2, nitrate 0, ammonia between 0 & .25, nitrite between 1 & 2.

How do I remedy the nitrite? More bio?

Actually, the ammonia appears to be 0 ... just kinda high nitrites.
