Problem area under maple trees - need ideas!

Hello gardeners. I need help with a major problem area in my front yard. Currently it is a perennial bed. It is on a fairly steep slope along a tall fence, with large maple trees directly on the other side. When I planted my perennials this was a full-sun bed, but the maples have gotten so large that now I receive full shade until about 2pm, then blazing, setting sun until sunset. The sun perennials don't bloom well, and the part-shade plants wilt in the setting sun! Most part-shade plants do better in morning sun/afternoon shade, not vice versa. Plus it is a very hard area to weed, and soil erosion is a factor due to the slope. There is nutrient competition due to the maple roots too. Help!! I'm thinking of ripping everything out and grassing it over, but it would be nice to see *something* along the tall expanse of fence. Anyone have any ideas?? I'm in Zone 4 (NH). I'd consider smallish bushes too - 6' or less in height. Thanks for your help!
