Pond de-icer options?

This is my ponds first winter so I am searching out heater options. I have a 1,500 gal pond with the deepest part at 36". There are 4 koi (10-12") 1 shubunkin, 1 comet and 7 small goldfish that came along with some plants unknowingly.

I have looked at floating de-icers, but was also told you can use a trough heater. Are trough heaters safe for fish?

How many watts would you suggest...is bigger better or not healthy for the winter pond enviornment?

I feel your pain last year was my winter with my pond and I was stuck in the same situation. I have a 900 gal pond 24" deep. It depends on what zone your in as to what kind or size heater you can choose to use. I live in southeast pa and we had a brutal winter last year. My saving grase was that I left my pump run all winter. I moved my waterfall supply hose to poor into my pond from 6" ubove the surface of the water and that kept the pond surface from completly freezing allowing dangerous gases to escape. I also tryed a 250w surface deicer but that didnt seen to work so well, I dont think it was large enough enough. Trough heater do work but you need to protect to fish from the heating element. I dont know if I did everything right but all my fish made it through the winter. As for the health of a winter enviornment, I just think of fish in a natural pond. The thing they have going is the depth of the water and you are at 36". I just let the water get cold because thats what happens in a natural pond. I just keep the surface from completly freezing because of the pond liner, so a surface deicer is the best way to do so.

GB, I used the long green air stones and suspended them vertically at about a foot under the surface and three feet apart using nylon line from my weed whacker (LOL). They maintained a large hole for most of the winter, but were reduced to two 10 inch holes during cold (near zero) nights. I purchased a heavy plastic box intended to store a boat battery and it made an excellent weather housing for the pump. I drilled two small holes for the air hose and one for the power cord. I also placed a brick on top to secure the lid and it kept the pump dry all winter. Note that those aquarium pumps were designed for indoor use are not water proof. Your idea of keeping the air stones closer together may provide a more condensed water movement. I'll try it this year.

I have a 5x10 (1.5 deep) homemade pond. I'm low-tech (much to the dismay of Mrs. Oklahawg): 1. I run an extension cord from the back patio to the pond. I buried one in a PVC pipe but the lawn guy sliced it off and there isn't enough slack to splice. 2. I use a standard livestock tank heater in the pond. It kicks in at 40 degrees. Rarely do I have a problem. 3. I have a plastic prefab outdoor playhouse my daughter outgrew. I took a section of that and placed it over one corner of the pond, reconfiguring the rocks from the pond edge to weight down the plastic piece. Its 2 inches thick so it won't bow under pressure. It only covers about 2.5 square feet of pond, but that's enough for the fish to hide under - I put the heater nearby. I rake out leaves any day its decent outside - sun and not too cold. Seems like there is always crap blowing into the pond! Also, I add water from the hose if I get days in the high 40s or higher. The water is 70 degrees, or so, as it comes out of the faucet. Its easy enough to attach and detach the hose from the faucet - I do this early enough in the day to allow any drippage to dry in the faucet. The fresh water always makes the fish happy. My biggest fish loss occurs in late, late winter when the water starts to warm, the fish start to become active and the natural food in the pond starts to disappear. (I've not "fed" the fish in years.)

My pond is 5x5and1/2' and 24" deep. I use a pond deicer during the winter. It pretty much keeps most of the snow melted. Its not covered. I don't have fish. Lots of people here have mentioned keeping a bubbler going during winter, so I would use both if I were you. Last year I only used a deicer when it was really cold, and would turn it off and run the pump when it was above freezing. But last year I lost 3 frogs, and I think it was because of the fluctuating temperatures. So this year I'll just use the deicer and if I want to oxygenate the water, I'll run a different electrical line to the pump. Good luck to you.

Hey how ya guys doing. I live in Pennslyvania, this winter has been pretty nasty. You either want a air bubbler or a submersable pump running that will spray water up. Thus breaking the ponds surface and providing oxygen for fish. I see you said something about a plastic ledge. Just make sure your pond does not freeze completely. Also, make sure that if you do have plastic over a pond with fish. Make sure it's not air tight so that harmful gasses can escape. I keep mine uncovered, I run a big underwaterpump that will spout water. This will freeze solid if it gets cold enough. I also have a floating pond de-icer that will keep a hole in the ice if everything freezes. Hope this helps Craig

Hi Melissa,
A while back we had a discussion about wintering fish over. I've posted the URL below just to save my old fingers a bit of retyping. As to using a heater...for the most part heaters don't really do that much for changing the temperature environment of the pond. Yes they will keep a hole open but even the largest heater isn't going to raise the temperature too much. This, of course, depends on the zone you live in or rather how cold it gets. The first person in the posting/thread listed below, Jenny, provided a link to an excellent article on the subject...'tis worth a read (I've checked and the URL is still valid so far). Hope all this helps.
