I believe it would be ok for you to use the goat manure in the root zone of your plants but I would keep the fresh chicken manure away as it will burn the roots with too much nitrogen. Goat manure doesn't have such a high level of readily accessible nitrogen. I often mix llama manure (similar) right into planting holes when I transplant plants. I would also recommend that you keep fresh animal manures away from the surface of any vegetables, of most concern would be root crops or salad greens. The concern here is with disease pathogens that might be transmited to humans from the manure. By the way, the reason a typical lasagna bed doesn't heat up is that 1) you shouldn't be using high nitrogen manures and 2) it shouldn't be as tall as a compost pile (3+ feet.) From the "Minnesota DNR" Minn DNR, come the following reasons for using wood mulch under trees: Benefits of mulching with wood chips · Saves Labor - no weeding, less time watering · Saves Water - far less watering needed, and more rain absorption · Safer - no need for chemical weed killers or herbicides · Stimulates growth - mulched trees grow faster than un-mulched trees · Makes trees more resistant to disease and insects · Keeps soil and roots from overheating in hot summers · Eliminates injury to trunk from mower collisions · Reduces soil compaction over roots and adds loft · Nourishes the soil by adding nutrients as it decomposes · Eliminates the need for tilling and resultant root injury · Reduces bruising of fallen fruit under fruit trees · Increase earthworm population resulting in better aeration A site with pictures of properly mulched trees can be found here Missouri Dept. of Conservation. Again, the use of manure (composted/un-composted) is up to the owner of said trees; although both sites state mulch adds nutrients to the soil. Hello Jorgen, First of all I am curious how you get poop from the southern Bahamas? I as because I'm from the northern Bahamas and have not met another resident here as far as I know. But your bio says you live in the US... As for the poop; I would suggest googling to see how "hot" goat manure is. You can also probably find recommendations for when to use it. Some search term like "can I use fresh goat manure" or similar. That said, it also depends on what plants you are considering adding the manure to the soils of. I have mulched my bananas with fresh horse manure and they did not get burned at all, in fact responded very well. But bananas are heavy feeders and can take much stronger fertilizer than some other plants, and also that was horse manure. Let us know what you decide to do! Happy growing :) Dan

She has alkaline clay with rocks at bottom like mine & less snow in winter: "My hardiest roses are the Canadians. John Davis, John Cabot, Wm. Baffin, Morden Sunrise, Morden Blush and Morden Centennial, Victorian Memory aka Isabelle Skinner, also a Canadian rose. All these only have tiny bit of tip damage and bloom a lot with no special care. Also, my Hybrid Perpetuals only have tip damage after winter. Magna Charta, Mrs. John Laing, Black Prince and Marchesa Buccella. The only negative is they don’t have long enough cutting stems. All my Austins are very hardy. The one I just can not grow is Jude. Leonardo da Vinci is super hardy and always healthy. Quietness comes through winter very well. Even Rouge Royale survives beautifully. Cinderella Fairy Tale is very hardy. Gruss an Aachen also. Ballerina and Marjorie Fair are both hardy. Poseidon, Princess Charlene de Monaco and Crazy Love didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. The surprise losses this year are Quicksilver, and Dames de Chenonceau who is left with only 1 cane. Versigny is also reduced down to almost nothing. This was a mild winter with very little snow.
