Antique Roses to pair with Austins??

Let's hear your suggestions please!

I have 34 foot long bed that runs along the front of the the house, that I am wanting to plant many Austins alongside antique roses. The bed has a approx 32" high retaining wall block line that I'll be planting in front of to disguise.

The house is off-white so I want plenty of colour, though I some white antiques might be the ticket to mix in and soften the strong effect. I had at my previous house for whites; Smith's Parish (REALLY like this rose!!), Gruss an Auchen, and Sombrieul.

Carey, can you please tell me the orientation of the bed? With the wall behind it, it would be best if there were morning sun and afternoon shade. If there is sun all day that might impose some limits. If your climate is fairly dry, like mine, Souvenir de la Malmaison and its sports should do really well. My SdlM blooms for most of the year, and with that length of bed I would plant three of four all along the bed for guaranteed bloom with beautiful flowers. I'd also mix in various polyanthas such as Marie Pavie, Marjory Palmer, Aunt Margy's Rose, Mary Daly, White Pet etc. You might also try Earth Song, which is modern but a really good Griffith Buck rose. A beautiful cream-colored tea rose that stays small for me is Alexander Hill Gray. A larger one with huge, gorgeous silvery pink flowers is William R. Smith. You don't say how wide the bed is but with old roses and many Austins wider is better. This sounds like a wonderful project!

I think Malcolm Manners said that there is an
E. Veyrat Hermanos cascading over a retaining wall at Florida Southern College. I cannot imagine a more beautiful sight. Maybe someone with more experience than I have will comment on its' suitability for your situation.

Thanks to everyone for writing. I already have these three in pots, and would like to plant them in a row along a pathway leading to a pergola. I have quite a bit of space to play with, but I'd like to have some idea of how wide they'll get in my area so I can allow for a decent set back from the path. What I like about them is the form, fragrance, color(s) and the size; no shrinking violets here. The place I want to plant them gets this fabulous golden light at sunrise and sunset and I'm thinking those colors would really set it off. The CdC is more for mid morning to mid afternoon than dawn/dusk, but I'm trying to plan it in such a way that there is some color to "star" all through the day. I'd like some idea of disease resistance so I can decide what I need to plant in front of them to hide any naked legs should they drop all their leaves due to blackspot. How does it sound to have these three in a row, maybe with relatively short white climbers on a pillar between them? (White-pink-white-yellow-white-purple) The white tall and narrow, the "colors" wide and sprawling. Suggestions, first impressions? Here is a link that might be useful:

I totally mix mine as well, but the two things that I have to watch most so that the moderns and antiques don't clash is color and form. Some of the moderns (like say Oranges and Lemons, or Tropicana) are such bright intense colors that they would fight for attention with the more subtle and fluffy OGRs (like SDLM). Also, a stiff one-cane wonder HT looks mighty silly mixed in with monster flowing teas or hybrid perpetuals. I try to end up with the bushier sorts at least behind the stiffer and smaller plants (like Seil says). If they can compete in height or color, I think they can look fine. For instance, a corner that comes to mind in my OGR bed has the tea Madame Cochet, the Austin Queen of Sweden, the HT-grandiflora Dream Come True, and the Buck shrub Dorcas. Looks fine to my eyes and the colors blend, with more or less comparable heights. Having perennials and other plants to draw the eye together like Mariannese says is a good strategy to make things more cohesive - in my case, I edge that bed with the purple salvia farinacia. In general I'd say the Austins are designed to mix well with OGRs, since they were bred to carry over those OGR characteristics into repeat blooming flowers. Cynthia

Iris_gal, mine is a shrub and looks very much like plumbago. It was neglected for a while and then moved, I was hoping to keep the size down with pruning, but 10 ft tall sounds scary:-). Carol, Janet here is a climber. I tried to grow it as a big shrub, but it was no good - it grew those notorious octopus canes with a cluster of heavy blooms on top, when the blooms opened they became too heavy and plopped face down into the dirt:-(. You are so far north though that it might not apply. It is a very clean rose here, no PM or rust at all, even now the foliage is beautiful. I used to have it in part sun and it balled regularly. I was itching to SP but moved it to full sun against a fence and giving it a last chance. It has gorgeous delicate blooms, but definitely a challenge for me to grow. No fragrance, by the way. Juliet, WS2000 isn't very red for me. I actually purchased it hoping it was leaning more towards the red spectrum. In the summer, it tends to be more "red" for me, but it's certainly not red. In the summer it opens in a VERY vibrant magenta color and fades off into a medium-dark crimson color. In cooler temps for me, it opens and stays a moderately dark crimson/purplish color. It somewhat reminds me of a color range you would see in an old gallica. The most color accurate photos I have seen are from tivoli_rose. This photo is what I typically see in the summer. I have La Reine, Baronne Prevost, Comte de chambord, Hermosa, Perle D Or, Old Blush, Irene Watts and Clotilde Soupert growing in with med sized shrubby DAs. The taller DAs that can be climbers look nice with the taller bourbons and HPs.

I'm in a completely different climate, so I'm not about to recommend particular cultivars. However, I, too, am mixing a bunch of OGRs and Austins in my new garden here, and I'll share with you the simpler way I sorted through the overwhelming number of choices out there.

I started with OGRs which I liked (for a variety of reasons), and found complimentary Austins which offered something not easily found among the OGRs (I'm not in the land of Teas, so for me that mostly meant soft yellow, peach and apricot shades for Austins, which are lacking among the mostly Gallicas, Bourbons, Portlands and Hybrid Perpetuals I picked out). So if I found something among the OGRs which fit my need for a sprawly shorter climber against the fence, I found a similar growth form in an Austin in colors not available among the OGRs. Same with the short bushy things.

For you, the colors may be reversed -- if you can't easily grow the pink-red-purplish Gallicas, Bourbons, Portlands and Hybrid Perpetuals, then perhaps you can seek proxies among the Austins. For my mind, to get variety in my color scheme, it's sort of silly to pick out Austins which look almost the same as the OGRs -- unless, of course, you want a more limited color scheme.

I have a bed that is all Austins and Tea Roses. I call it my 'English Tea Bed'. For Austins I have Redoute and Mary Rose, Bishop's Castle, Jubilee Celebration and Falstaff. For Teas I have Mlle. F Kruger, Rozette d Lizzy, Marie d'Orleans, Louisiana Arcadia Tea and Crepescule. I like the way they compliment each other. Although I think there is a bit too much pink in there. I have a Pat Austin that isn't doing well in it's current spot (too much shade), that I may add to this bed to brighten it up.
