I am looking around here for pics of gardens. I discovered the Cottage Garden Forum in June, and post there a lot. When I first saw this, I recognized the flower someone had planted in a bed I took over gardening at church. It was my favorite flower in the patch, and then someone informed me I was growing a plant that is illegal to grow. I was very sad. I now have a couple of Russian Sages that love the area, and get very full, too. Sue

Ha, ha, ha, ha: Yes, Nandina domestica ('Sacred Bamboo' in some countries). Why do I laugh? Forget it, it's almost a long story and not worth the telling. I garden in zone 10 and Nandina domestica, at least healhy specimens, slowly advance by root progression, but no-where near as vigorous as botanical bamboo (Bambusa) which, if you have enough patience, you can actually see growing before your eyes in the growing season - I know, I've watched it, and, if it (Nandina) becomes a problem, it aint too difficult to dig up. It is mainly an environmental weed especially on moist sites when I lived in Melbourne I pulled up and binned then all. They tend to take over the garden after a while. Here is a link that might be useful: Watsonia : Environmental Weed.

Sarracenia purpurea, one of the Hardy insectivorous pitchers. This one is the most widely distributed going all the way from Florida to Alberta if memory serves. Not really a water plant so much as it is an acid bog plant. The crown is usually above the waterline. The flower has actually dropped its petals and is now forming seeds. There are several varieties of purpurea, including burkei, venosa, montana, and heterophylla, but chances are that this is just straight purpurea. Here's mine blooming about a month ago.
