Can someone please ID this plant for me?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I grow quite a few perennials, all of which I know the name of - except for this one. A clump of it was given to me by my mother-in-law several years ago, and it has been doing fantastic each and every year. I like it so much, that I wanted to go and buy another, but I have no clue what it's called. Went to numerous nurseries this morning, but nobody could help me. (I didn't take a picture with me, and my drawings were probably quite confusing, lol)

Anyway, here it is. I cut it down in the winter, when all of it has died, and it comes back each spring and it is currently blooming so beautifully. It gets about 5-6', if that's of any help.

I would say some type or sage or salvia or even a butterfly bush like April said on the other forum. Judy

Thanks Judy. I know it's not a butterfly bush because I have a few of those, too. The stems are softer and more pliable than butterfly bushes.

It could also be Aloe dintera.I do grow both. There is a white keel in the center of the under side of the aloe variegata. The Aloe dintera is founded in form on the under side and the variegata has a more triangular form. Aloe variegata is shorter leafed and the dintera is longer. That said, there is a lot of variability in these aloes so they could be a mis . Aloe vareigata has a huge natural range in South Africa and there is natural variability. There are a few aloes that are similar in appearance. The hardiness rating on them is different. I think A. dinteri is hardy to 25 and Aloe variegata is hardy to 19 if given perfect drainage. I would put it in a gritty mix and mist it on occasion and it might take a couple of months or more. Aloes can be slow about it. This one will loose its roots because of rot especially after it has bloomed. I keep it dry during the bridge from spring to summer. Here are some photos of it . The first two are Aloe variegata. showing the central rib and the second showing that it is apparent in the small aloe. The second two are Aloe dinteri , I THINK. they called them partridge breast aloe. when I bought them. Aloe dinteri is called Nambibian Partridge Breast. It looks like a type of Veronica "Speedwell" to me, it's very lovely. I have two different Veronica's in my garden, one is red fox and the other name escapes me right now but it is purple

It looks like Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) to me. Try googling for pictures. If you agree, you might want to research this plant and make sure you feel comfortable keeping it in your garden.

adona, I found out yesterday that it is in fact purple loosestrife. I don't have the heart to tell my DH that once it's finished blooming, it will "miraculously" disappear from the garden. I've decided to plant a Russian Sage in its place. Hopefully he won't notice the difference, lol.

I am looking around here for pics of gardens. I discovered the Cottage Garden Forum in June, and post there a lot. When I first saw this, I recognized the flower someone had planted in a bed I took over gardening at church. It was my favorite flower in the patch, and then someone informed me I was growing a plant that is illegal to grow. I was very sad. I now have a couple of Russian Sages that love the area, and get very full, too.
