Bluestone prices not so bad after all

Last fall when I received my backordered plants from Bluestone, there were a whole bunch of coupons enclosed. I filed them away until now not thinking they wouldn't save me much in the future. They did.

My order for 17 plants came to $168.15

Minus the coupons I could use: $40.40

Minus 15% for early ordering: $19.16

For a total of: $108.59 for 17 plants or an average of $6.39 per plant

Oh yes, I also will be receiving a bonus plant of their choice and because I had a coupon for free shipping on my next order, $108.59 is all I pay.

That's pretty darned good IMO.

I have to agree. I have none of the special coupons you have mentioned, but I have so far booked some great deals from Bluestone just by using the 15% off early ordering discount code and watching their rotating 50% off specials. The shipping is among the cheapest of any mail order company I have seen.

I am excited about the larger sized plants and I am very willing to give the new biodegradable pots a chance, especially since they are ultimately better for the environment.

It is a shame that people are posting such negative reviews of Bluestone on the Garden WD just because they have changed their business model. If you are careful, Bluestone is still very much on the inexpensive side compared to all other *reputable* mail order companies.

Unlike Sandy, I never see butterflies on my Rudbeckia nor did I see it on my Achillea. I finally removed the Achillea after 4 years of no activity on it. I plan to take out the Rudbeckia this year. It is risky when you order a "butterfly garden" from sources that really aren't experienced butterfly gardeners. I mean they are in it for the $ and somehow I doubt that their gardeners have time to observe butterfly activity on certain plants. I have the same reservations about ordering mixed butterfly seed collections. I mean, do you just throw them all out there and hope for the best, and then you would have varying sizes all thrown together in the mix so you have short plants being smothered by taller, more vigorous plants. Not a good idea IMHO. Some companies at least disclose what plants are included in the group, so you can make an educated decision about what works well in your area. But sometimes it is still trial and error. I stick with my basic 3 or 4 butterfly nectar attractants, and they are Verbena bonariensis, Mexican Sunflower, Cosmos sulphureous the 'Cosmic' series, and zinnias. These are pretty much a sure bet in any garden. If I have nothing else going in the garden, these picks will do the job. Susan

It is just DH & Myself, and I buy the sox he likes, all in white and mine too. so don't have a problem with matching, when one gets a hole in it, it goes in a box till another one does, them match the survivors as a pair. I wish I could remember the name of a celeb, who said he figured he finally "made it" when he was rich enough to only have to wear a pair of sox only once. He could always put on a new pair. Thanks, VStapes! Your combination of Summer Wine and that artemisia (what's it called? Is it Valerie Finnis?) is truly STUNNING! I must think of Summer Wine then, if this Coppertina does not work out.... sigh! Oh, BTW, I tried to grow that Artemisia Valerie Finnis last year but it did not survive our winter.... I must find another spot and try again! It is really stunning. I LOVE IT! Thanks.

A few years ago my son Michael went to the local ER for pain in his lung area, he has no known pulmonary issues. They rushed him in for an emergency Thoracentesis, they removed more than a liter of fluid. Several days later he was released after we were told this probably won't happen again and they found no cause. He was 40 yo but I brought him home to watch him awhile. 6 days later after a night that he ccouldn't sleep he finially fell asleep on the recliner in the early morning so I covered him and let him be. Early after noon I could see his eyes open following me...I KNEW something was wrong, I ask him Michael what's wrong, he whispered mom I'm going to die taking deep breaths between each word. I called an ambulance. He was taken to the local ER where again they did a Thoracentesis and again more than a liter of fluid. He was transported to Presby hospital in Pittsburgh where he was rushed again for emergency procedure. This time a chest tube. For days we watched it pump fluids from his lung. Test after test and no known cause. They also found 7 blood clots in his lungs so he was started on blood thinners. The doctor told us at one point 24 hours and if the fluid is still building up we have to open his chest. Suddenly it stopped. 3&1/2 weeks later he was released to come home. He is 6foot 7 200 pounds normally, he lost 57 pounds that month. They found no known cause for the fluid and no cause for the clots. He was sent home with a Picc line to start 30 days of antibotic infusion. I did all the infusions but a nurse had to come to care for the line. I think each infusion took roughly an hour every 8 hours....so I'm thinking Anglophillia..all the travel time back and forth another hour at least for infusion + beginning and end flush....geesh should we all pack sleeping bags and camp out with you in the hospital parking lot.

Is anyone aware of the next time of year that Bluestone runs another sale? Of course I kept putting off placing my order, and now the 15% off coupon time is over. I only want to purchase 3 plants but I like to find a bargain if I can.

I don't have a 15% coupon. On the back of my catalog is a coupon code for the discount and it's good until Feb 8. You might want to check your catalog if you have one.

Linda, I think they usually - or, should I say they USED TO - have a sale in summer, after most people have bought their spring stuff. Not sure what they have planned now.

I haven't placed an order yet, but I plan to. Sheesh, hard to believe it's almos February! I guess I need to get myself in gear and place an order to take advantage of the early discount and the coupons.

Kevin, I just checked my catalog and my Expiration Date for the discount is the same as the card they sent me after my catalog arrived - January 25th. Darn. I'm going to keep watching this forum and hopefully someone will post again when Bluestone is having another sale.

I have done this with all the online nurseries that I have used.....

Put your order together...call them and ask if you place an order what discount will they offer you today? I have gotten a bigger discount and/or free plants.

It never hurts to ask all they can say is NO or you might get a deal.

I received an email earlier today from Bluestone that says, "Early Order Discount Expires February 15th, 2012" so perhaps the date has been extended? As Marquest said, it certainly doesn't hurt to ask.
