Only worked with rebar once. We used a band-saw to cut the rebar without any trouble.
Not sure how well it would cut with a hack-saw?
My uncle who has welded all his life, actually carefully welded it together.
I have seen people carefully heat it up and re-shape it also into L shapes. But, I have also seen it break while heating and re-shaping.
Besides welding, off-hand I can not think of how else it could be tied together. If any ideas come to me, i'll post.

You can do it with just hose clamps. Take a look at the thread below, scroll down to hoovb's post. Also, in What would you do with this disaster?<?a>, scroll down to linrose's post to see a different version made of pipes.

Yes, hose clamps would work just fine or visit any hardware store and they could help you figure out something also.

Thank you Diane and Jim. I actually have built 3 of those would structures that Hoovb had. I wanted few smaller metal ones. I like the pipe idea too. Now I need to see which one would be cost effective.

I tried it once with both a recipricating saw and with a hack saw. I found it extremely difficult and will not try it again.
I'm sure others, with more powerful saws would have more success.

Use 3/8 rebar not bad to work with all by hand no welding
just wired them togather.

I just love, love your structures. Specially the Don Juan one. How did you bend them? Do you remeber what gauge wire did you use?

I'm following this thread with great interest since I want to do something similar. Great structures by Harold, Linrose and Hoov. Harold's one looks easy for someone like me since we just stick them in the ground and them wire them together (right?).

Wire has worked very well for me, too. With a very stout wire, I used plyers to twist it.

I went to Lowes this afternoon. They did not have any 6' rebar, all they had 10' 3/8" rebar all covered in rust. Rather than getting the 10' long one to cut and paint, I bought the plastic covered stakes form garden center. I will post pictures as soon the teepees are up and the roses is attached to them.

If there is anything wrong with using these stakes plase let me know soon.

Ten foot rebar isn't that long once you put each end into the ground, and you curve it. We have used it all over our yard. The green stakes can break easily. THey haven't worked well for me.

Is it easy to curve or do you need some sort of tool to do it? And how deep into the ground would you put it. And what sort of wire would be used to tie them together? Thanks in advance.

As I mentioned in another thread it is easy if you can get those 10' rebars home (we have no truck or SUVs).
Here is the structure for Laguna from different angles. No saw, no tools were used, only a flat black rustoleum spray and a cup to hold the top together. We didn't have too much space so we wanted a small circle the rest is occupied by the plant growing in the successive years.

I will take a few photos of the curved rebarr - those are used to hold the plants together (for Abraham Gdarby, for example) not as trellises for climbers, as the rebars above. I think my husband put the rebar into a V shaped tree branch and slowly bended them into a curve. Picture is coming.

Thanks Ceterum. I think that makes sense to me now that I've seen the photo. Did you not put any horizontal rebars around the tower (to hold the rose stems). Now all I need to do is get the rebars and the cup and hopefully make something like this out of it (or Harold's one seems simple too).

No horisontals, Sanju. the rebars went into the soil into a circle so the were dented inward and reached each other on the top so the cup could be put on them to stabilize the structure. It is so simple as it could be.

Here is another rebar "structure" formed from two rebars bended into semi-circles and crossed with each other an just tied on the top. It is useful for very bush octopus-like roses that don't want to stay orderly in the summer. Here the structure is almost empltu because a rose that was virused 9- as it turned out by the end of this winter - died out (almost,) so I will get rid of it. But wil will use the structure somewhere else.

That seems to be a very good idea as well for those octopus-type roses. I will definitely do both of these in my garden. Thank you so much for your help.

I tried hammering the green plastic covered stakes into ground and the plastic ripped. I found out the Home Depot can and will cut their rebars to the size. So I have them cut 3 20' long 3/8" rebar( for about $4 each) to 5' sections. The whole project, rebar, can of paint, and hose clips costs less than $20. All those green garden stakes ($4 each) are so going back to Lowes.

I have 4 Christoper Marloes. After the flowers open, all the canes and flowers end up on the ground. Last year, I bought 2 obelisks and tie the two in the front garden to them.

This year the canes completely formed to the obelisks and have covered them all the way to the top.

These rebars will form a similar structures for the two in the back for only 1/5 of the price.

Wanttogarden, that looks great (I especially like the bird on top). What did you make the circular hoops with? and how did you fix them to the vertical rebars? And how did you tie them at the top?
