Would you share where you got your seeds? I was thinking of trying bareroots again. Didn't work last year. I wonder if geranium seeds can be winter sown, do you happen to know?

I got my seeds from Thompson Morgan. These are called Splidh Splash. They have others as well.

Splish Splash is the exact one I want. I have 3 Johnson's Blue and it is a wonderful plant and reblooms. Would you mind e-mailing me about a possible trade?
I also want to grow the geranium Patricia.

Both 'Johnson's Blue' and 'Patricia' cannot be propagated true-to-name via seed. Any seedlings raised from these plants will likely be significantly different from the "parents".

'Splish Splash' on the other hand is a reliable seed strain.

CPG, that is interesting and thank you for the insight. I would like to see a propagation from Patricia or JB, to see what it looks like.
Splitting works for me.

Hi Carla! I am not one to raise plants by seed. Just not a patient enough person for that. But a few years ago, out of curiosity, I took a few seeds from my 'Midnight Reiter', and 'Alba' perennial geraniums and sowed them directly in the ground. Most came up. So if it was easy for me I am sure anyone could get them to grow.
On a side note about Splish-Splash: I bought a plant several years ago at a nursery after falling in love with it in a mag. I have to say I was dissapointed. There wern't many streaks of blue in the flower, which was a dull white color itself. The plant is also rather leggy and gets horrible mildew. But I have heard of several people who get them to grow wonderfully, and the flowers look just like the pics in the mags. If you do buy one make sure you get it from a good company.

Both 'Johnson's Blue' and 'Patrica' are sterile hybrids, as are a good many other types of hardy geraniums, so you will not get seed-grown plants of these - propagation is only through division or other, asexual means. Many of the species will produce viable seeds (and some hybrids as well) but will not always come true to form. Many of these plants are rather promiscuous and will hybridize naturally with other cranesbills in the vicinity. But that doesn't mean you won't get some great garden-worthy plants!

'Splish Splash' is a cultivar of G. pratense, although it seems to be a named newly assigned to 'Striatum' (syn. 'Bicolor') rather than a distictly unique cultivar. Pratense is typically a terrific self-seeder except for the double forms, which are sterile.

Carla, I sent you the seeds. I also put some extras in there of a couple of things you might like. If you don't like the extras just give them to someone who might. I hope they grow for you!

You might also take a look at gardenweb's exchange forums. Search the members' lists for the cranesbills you are interested in and see if you have something they want that you could trade with them. The only cost involved in postage.

I've had great success winter sowing them. They do vary greatly in sprouting time. Some varieties sprout quite early and others seem to take forever.

I had good luck germinating these via winter sowing this year. Almost all seeds germinated.
