What are your 'backbone' perennials?

What are you 'must have' perennials? The ones that form the 'backbone' of your garden and are repeated or planted en masse'. I'm trying to narrow down my list of wonderful plants to a few which are worthy of being the backbone of my garden. Once I have those in place,I can fill in with abandon any plant that strikes my fancy knowing that the 'backbone' perennials will pull the whole look together and keep it from seeming too random- at least that's the theory I'm operating on. So, what plants are your best performers? Which could you have many of in your garden and not tire of them?

I know I'll be adding more Diascia 'Coral Canyon'. That plant is a front of the border workhorse that blooms non-stop from spring through fall (mine finally quit when we got a hard freeze in the middle of November). I also love Rudibeckia 'Goldsturm' for it's huge and impressive display of yellow flowers through much of the season. There are many, many more. Which are your favorites and why?
