Drunk fish!

Has anybody else ever had drunk fish in their pond? I went away for 2 weeks, leaving my daughter to feed fish and clean pumps. I forgot that it was fruit season: my neighbor's pears from a tree overhanging our property fell into the pond. When I got home, the pond smelled like cidar, and the fish were in a bad way. i thought I would lose my 20 inch silver/black metallic koi, who was on his side, eyes half-closed, and breathing heavily at the top of the water. I did a water-change twice, after removing all the rotten and half-eaten pairs. They didn't eat yesterday (hangover?) but today are just fine, even the big one who was so ill.

Watch out for fruit in ponds!

Never heard of drunk fish before, not even Cliff and Joann's when they drink beer.LOL I'm glad that they are ok now and that you returned when you did. Glenda

Mmmmm cider. Yummy. Toss in some asprin, and they will be fine in the morning.

It's going to be pretty harmless :-) In fact, you can source out various recommendations for homemade fertilizer concoctions that include beer straight out of the bottle. They don't really do anything but they don't cause any fatalities either. The alcohol content is negligible and even more diluted once it has gone through your system. I'd be more concerned about the urea content of the urine causing burning of plant tissue if applied directly than I would about the alcohol.....much like the effect of dogs peeing on bushes. For best/safest results, I would the think the compost would be the best target. And yes, the mental image is a bit disturbing :-))

BUT - no one has addressed how one PLANTS through newspaper. I have a lot of bulbs to put down tomorrow. I planned to poke or cut holes in the paper - or depending on how well I can kneel and bend tomorrow - leave a narrow (uncovered) row to poke bulbs into. How do YOU plant through 3 - 5 sheets of wet paper? cora" I suspect bulbs would have no problems coming up thru the paper so you could just set them out, lay in the paper then mulch and you would be fine. As far as planting out I primarily use this in my veggie beds. I lay the paper out over the bed and simply poke/slice in a hole with the Hori Hori (See Link Below) where I need a planting hole but you could easily poke thru it with a dibble or even your finger if you were putting in seed. While it is wet the newspaper is very easy to work with. After I lay in the transplants I mulch with straw or grass clippings. It was a great Leave it to Beaver kind of childhood. We were VERY lucky! Donna, you drinking? ahahahahhaaha The newspaper doesn't really tell the whole story. The buyeers wanted to take out the creosote soaked old pilings and replace them with concrete or sheathe them with something. City refused all options for the owners. They had no way to update it, get it more environmentally safer or anything. My Dad gave all the beach rights to the city a while ago. And the property above, also. The city has made a park out of the property and they want the water rights, and pilings. Now they will probably have a lot easier time condemning and taking it. Shame.

In cased you missed the map that was shown on TV for days following the 2004 election, most states are shaded red and only a few are shaded in blue. The blue states are shoved off into a corner and they are very expensive places to live and not overloaded with opportunities. So if you are like me, you have to find a place where you can enjoy the what the area has to offer and not let the political views of the majority get to you. The OP's viewpoints seem somewhat libertarian and then somewhat republican but who cares? Nobody. You can move to just about anywhere and nobody will shove their political views down your throat. Not even here do they do that. If I wanted to I could meet up with anoy political party that interested me but since I am not into politics I will go back to just enjoying the scenery and low cost of living, being close to good shopping and relatively OK driving distance to the big urban core where I can walk around for a few minutes or have a nice meal, feel like I stepped into the twilight zone then hop in the truck come back home where you can have a big property with horses and fire guns and play cowboys & indians and do whatever it is you please til the cows come home. The Knoxville area does come across as an area where this would be possible too so I'd say look at Knoxville.

Never heard of drunk fish before..Maybe drinking like a fish..lol. Hmmm, could that be where they got the idea? Very interesting. If you only could have gotten there a little bit earlier, before the sick part or the hangover, and had a camcorder. Then we would all be able to see what drinking like a fish looks like..lol. :'D

No, you really wouldn't want too see it. Probably like watching drunk people. Only entertaining if you are drunk as well.

Most likely the Koi were all talking like: "Yahhh know...we need to go on a road trip...No...I'mmmm serriouus, ya know...find another pond and hang out." And the other fish seem to think its a good idea.

Edith, we get that with the birds that come to the mulberry when the fruit is ripe. That ferments on the tree. They gorge themselves and then fly away in very non-straight lines... oh yes, and with instant intestinal issues when they swerve over the back deck... the cat we used to have would sit under the mulberry tree and look up with hope in her eyes...
My point being, no mulberry trees near the pond either!

What is the water lizard looking thing behind the fish. THey are both cool looking. Hi Glenda. I a haven't forgotten about you. Just got sidetracked. Getting back on track now and am at a standstill with my ponds for the moment so going to try and ship some things out that I have promised people.

LOL! I have seen National Geographic video about elephants, monkeys and chimps seeking out fermented fruit. Apparently humans are not the only ones who imbibe. Now we can add fish to the list. I wonder if they get a buzz from the alcohol in the water of if it is only the fruit that makes them drunk. Not everyone agrees the animals are drunk or are seeking out the fermented fruit. In any case, it is funny seeing the tipsy critters. It isn't fun for the villagers who have to deal with them. Sandy

Your not kidding Sandy. In some of those villages, it is VERY difficult to get medication. One hung over elephant can exhaust an entire's village supply of asprin.

Not to mention the drunk monkey's running off with the only village lampshade. Funny for the monkey, not so much for the people.
