Comments (13)Black Lace is a form of Sambucus nigra so it does not sucker as does S. canadensis. Also - if you grow only one clone you will not get much if any fruit. It is self incompatable. I also beleive that the species blooms on old wood. It blooms in the spring and not in mid-summer as does S. canadenis. I cut mine back each spring and pinch it often to get a real bushy plant, but I only get a few flowers and no fruit. The new growth is green but changes quickly to dark black....See MoreNeed help with Samyl and Black Lace Elderberry
Comments (7)to Floral-uk: I really appreciate your help. I have found several sites - one is Home Guides, that states for the Black Lace: Cut off all shoots to ground on young Black Lace Elderberry in early spring and years after prune 1/3 of all shoots and remove all older stems. Before I started pruning the Black Lace it looked like the other 3 elderberries. This information is similar to the care of American Elderberry. I have a large stand of American elderberry and they have to be pruned back hard every spring. They are cut to 30" or can be cut to ground and still grow to 12' and bloom/bear. With the European elderberry, shown in pictures - they are still about 18" tall in three years. I only cut off dead shoots. They appear to be growing some this year, but the growth rate has been very slow and not as described in any article I have read. I have never found a complete article as to the care and pruning of Samyl or Samdal elderberry. Since I don't think pruning is the cause of the delayed growth, that would leave insects, diseases, or nutrient deficiency, ph etc. I have never seen insects, or indication of disease. What is your Ph? With what and how do you fertilize?? Also, do these ever get pruned, or do they grow into a permanent bush/tree? Can you send or direct to pic. of mature plant? I can't believe I am unable to find complete information on these....See MoreWhat Does Black Lace Elderberry Look Like as a Seedling?
Comments (8)So my Black Lace Elderberry is making some progress, but it has some unusual growth habits I wanted to clarify. The main stem appears to have just died, and all the growth is coming from side stems to that. Additionally, any time this plant goes without water and the soil is dry for even two days, it kills off one of the minor stems entirely. Is it normal for this species to have so much dieback, particularly on the main stem? Should I just cut the main stem off completely, and maybe if I do that back to the point of the living stem it will promote another offshoot? P.S., Notice in the second photo the ends of the largest leaves are starting to turn purple. P.P.S., I have a "Wandering Jew" planted in this planter, which is probably a failed experiment because it is such a fast-growing and dominant plant. But that is the dark purple leaf you see around the edges....See Moresleepycatt
