Elderberry - Black Lace Shrub
Comments (3)I don't have any firsthand knowledge if this shrub sets viable seeds or not. However, it is patented which means that it is propagated by licensed growers assexually to ensure they get a consistent, exact reproduction of the plant each time. Seed collection/growing is not prohibited under the terms of the patent but that generally means that the seedlings will not always be true to the parent plant. It is quite possible, give viable seeds, that a seedling from this plant would produce an entirely green leafed plant, for example. This is often the case with the seedlings generated from any named cultivar - they may or may not bear any resemblance to the parent and cannot legally be called by that name. Personally, I'd rather invest my time and effort and $$ in a small start of this shrub from a reputable nursery if I really wanted one, rather than risk less than optimum results from seed. On ebay, it is always a case of buyer beware....See MoreBlack Lace Elderberry
Comments (15)Interesting the very different experiences folks are having with this shrub. So I thought I would add my two cents from Toronto. I have two in my front garden (one of either side of the front walk), which is part sun and clay soil with lots of organic content. And they are excellent. I keep them relatively small with regular pinching, but I let them go a bit this Spring so I would get flowers and there are dozens on each shrub (still only about three inches across but growing everyday). They are bullet-proof and vigorous, for me, and their colour and form and highly dissected leaves are not easily replaceable. I have them with (among others) Liberty hosta, pincushion boxwood, Rozanne Geranium, Jack Frost Brunnera, Full Moon Maple, Krossa Regal and Blue Mammoth hostas, and Incrediball hydrangeas. I love the mix but it would be boring without the contrast this shrub brings, which makes everything around it pop. If I can figure out how to post pictures someday, I will....See MoreBlack Lace Elderberry-Sambucus nigra 'Eva'
Comments (3)This plant grows like a weed with no problem. It does not die back in winter although it is deciduous. The thing to remember is, contrary to what some nurseries tell you, DON'T cut it back in the Spring. The plant flowers in June and new buds form in August, so the plant should be cut back right after flowering. It needs to be cut back every year as otherwise it grows spindly but, if it is cut back in the Spring, it won't flower that year. It grows very big and grows very easily from cuttings. It is a lovely plant with fabulous flowers. Enjoy!...See MoreLooking for a Black Lace Elder?
Comments (18)Hi all, I was looking for that one too. I had seen them here too at Extra Foods, but the price they're charging us here in The Pas is $24.98. That's quite a markup and I've noticed all of their other shrubs and perennials are quite expensive. Maybe if they actually watered them when them come in and didn't have half of them die, they could sell them for a similar price you get them for... I felt so sad earlier this spring walking through and seeing so many plants just dried to the bone... They brought in awhole lot of the Emerald cedars earlier last month and didn't water them... they were $19.99 for a six foot plant and now they're on for $4.94 each, because they are pretty much half dead... They really need someone who knows plants to help out because I see shade plants out in the full sun... I might pick a Black Lace Elder up if they drop the price and it looks like it might make it... BTW what's happened to the Hemerocallis '08 thread? I can't access it. Rob...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
