Lotus in a barrel question

gardenscents

I planted two seedlings that I started from lotus seeds I took from another plant. The seedlings had 3 or 4 leaves each and looked healthy. I planted them in a whiskey barrel according to Joyce's directions (got them on this site) and they did ok for awhile, then started dying back. I had mosquito dunks in the barrel and the leaves started turning brown, then black. I put a pump in to circulate the water (to eliminate the need for the dunks) and I'm not sure if the leaves are going to recover, die back for the winter now (I'm in South Carolina, zone 8), or the pump is a no-no. HELP! I do have other seeds and I suppose I could restart them next spring - but what about the pump? And if no pump, what about mosquitos?
