Bottlebrush Buckeye

I just collected some bottlebrush buckeye seeds. I know they need to be planted immediately and I'm going to start them in pots but do they need a chilling period? Should I leave the pots outside over the winter or does it matter?

Plants for a Future Database: Aesculus parviflora - Seed - best sown outdoors or in a cold frame as soon as it is ripe. The seed germinates almost immediately and must be given protection from severe weather. The seed has a very limited viability and must not be allowed to dry out. Stored seed should be soaked for 24 hours prior to sowing and even after this may still not be viable. It is best to sow the seed with its 'scar' downwards. If sowing the seed in a cold frame, pot up the seedlings in early spring and plant them out into their permanent positions in summer.

Thank you. I guess I'll keep the pots in the unheated GH. It's not warm but remains above freezing.

I think Red and bottlebrush germinate in fall. A. glabra, hippocastanum, and flava/octandra need a cold stratification period first, IME.

I planted 3 bareroot whips under a pin oak in late 2016. I mulched the planting area with composted stump grindings from a tree removal at the time of planting, and followed up with shredded leaves and wood chips in 2017 and 2018. They've been doing fine without any supplemental watering. They are near the bottom of a small slope in soil that drains very slowly. Standing water even forms at the bottom of the slope after prolonged rain, but hasnt hurt. 2017 was droughty but they were fine. Seems to suggest that with a soil high in organic material, mulch, and shade, they can handle dry periods. A neighboring nursery has some larger specimens in near full sun with a southeast exposure that look good too, but I dont know if they are watering them regularly.

Christopher - you really have a wealth of interesting plants at your location, some of which would definitely not thrive (or survive) at my location. Based on its native range, I'm guessing Amianthium would be "iffy" here. "I have a collection of poisonous plants" - that sounds like a great topic for a separate discussion :) VV - that's interesting that the late bottlebrush buckeye varieties grow larger than the species - I would've assumed they have the same mature size. I don't see a lot of them (the species in general) planted in my area, possibly because they're not as well known here as they are farther south. This planting is located at the Morton Arboretum (photo from several years ago)

I harvested some seeds this fall, mixed them with some moist sand and refrigerated. they've sprouted now and I am wondering if I should put them in the ground now or wait to pot up in the spring (Z4b-5a)
