Hollyhock (alcea) in a bed with shasta daisy?

I grew Charter's maroon from small bluestone plants a few years ago and loved it. They were very exposed in full sun and grew easily without staking (which I am not willing to do.) And the bases looked really ratty.

I had an idea to mix them in with Becky Shasta Daisy for a white on black vignette (and maybe a third color, blue? Orange?)

It's still a full sun spot, but obviously they will be growing among shasta daisies and will be somewhat crowded. Will they do okay like that? Or do they really need to be alone so non of the base gets shaded by neighboring plants?
