Ordered from Roots & Rhizomes lately?

I ordered from them years ago and the plants were so tiny that it took four years for the daylilies to bloom. Needless to say I didn't order again. As I read their catalog today, it appears they may be sending bigger plants now. They have such a great selection.... Anyone have any experience in the last two or three years?

good luck with all that ... been there done that.. probably 50/50 ... on where the plants supplied will fall ..

I had ordered from them quite a few years ago (8-10+ years?), and I was pleased with my order. Don't remember any specifics other than that.

Well, I didn't realize I already had Cherry Valentine from RR and ordered it again from Marietta because the picture in the RR catalog looked nothing like the picture from Marietta. As I have seen others post pictures of their Cherry Valentine blooms, I can see that Marietta has it correct. Anyway, the ones from Marietta are sending up bloom scapes while the ones from RR, like the other Daylilies I got from them, are struggeling along just to make green leaves. I sure hope they are able to at least grow roots and get something going from the root system later in the year. I know I am being impatient but after seeing the quality of plants I got from Marietta vs RR and the way the Marietta Daylilies took off right away, I want everthing to grow quickly.

The bloom stalks you are currently enjoying in those new additions were actually set in the garden of origin. That would not be considered rebloom, since the plants did not bloom this spring in your own garden. What you're seeing now is just a delightful bonus. If they should bloom in spring and again later in the season next year, you can consider it rebloom. Laurie

We had a spirited discussion about this, a couple of years ago, The answer is cuttings and seeds will work. Those "rhizomes" will not. They are not really rhizomes, but some kind of water storage thing.

Why do Iris rhizomes get planted in Late Summer/Fall?

They will grow to full size quickly once they start growing, but when it gets really hot they start to brown & crisp up around the edges. Tall bearded iris can look pretty rough in July & August, their dormant period, & then green up again in the fall. Again, a few varieties of bearded iris can look pretty good even in the heat, others can look downright awful. Of course, I'm talking about what I see here in KY. I think you are much farther north than me so they may all look much nicer in the summer. Siberian & Louisiana iris look pretty good all season, I don't get as much bloom from those though.

They're owned by Jungs. I haven't ordered from them, but I buy from the Jungs outlet store in town. Their plants are usually a little smaller and not as healthy as the other nurseries, but they're often cheaper and they do have some good varieties. Anyway, there's very little reason to order again from a place that you've had a bad experience with. Head over to the daylily board and they'll give you a long list of great places to get daylilies including the lily auction where you can find almost anything.

I ordered from them 5 or 6 years ago, about $600 worth of mainly daylilies and some other perennials. I was totally shocked when the plants arrived. Bareroot, tiny (!), and I paid between $12 and $15 for each daylily variety. I felt totally ripped off. I carefully planted each bare root rizome carefully in a pot first to get them started before I even dared to put them out in the ground. Several didn't make it, the rest took three years before they bloomed. Never again! I have never had to pot up perennials first that I got mail-order. Initially I was willing to pay $12 or $15 for some really neat daylily varieties, but after seeing those tiny sad looking things that arrived I felt ripped off.
To be fair, my experience is 6 years old, but I am not chancing it with them again, too many good ones out there to order from.

There are a lot of great daylily nurseries out there to buy from where you will get bigger plants for cheaper and of course there are great nurseries for other types of plants too. I personally visit Cottage Gardens Daylilies to buy daylilies, but they do mail order. They start at $5. http://daylily.net/gardens/cottagegardens/

R&R has had better ratings over the past year (according to the nursery review site that-must-not-be-named). Notably, though, one reviewer stated "I ordered half a dozen daylilies and received the most pitiful, paltry, pathetic, puny plants I have ever seen and that's just the "P's"."

When I had my bad ordering experience years ago it wasn't just the tiny plants, but the dead one that was replaced with...another dead one.

I know of too many good mail order nuseries that send good-sized healthy plants to take another chance with R&R.

Very well, folks! Thanks for the reminder that a tiger doesn't usually change his stripes. I really had my eye on perennials this time, but, as you say, there are plenty of very good companies out there. Thanks for the input.
