need some help with transplant shock

I had several new plants in the ground when it was observed that I need to raise this bed. It is about five years old and had never been re-worked. I was afraid to do it, but my mother-in-law, who suggested it, takes up her plants and moves them all the time successfully. I have killed some that way, but had success sometimes, too. They were only out of the ground for one night, and the roots were never bared. One of the plants is a duranta, trained to a standard. Its leaves are droopy, and don't react to water at all. I am keeping it moist. Is that a mistake? I know it is drought tolerant, but I have been told to water more when transplanting. I could not find my bottle of root stimulator when I re-planted it. Should I go find it? What can y'all tell me?
