Boy oh boy, I would leave the fence just the way it is! I was on the cottage garden forum the other day and everyone was trying to come up with ways to ADD just that type of fence. Here is a post on the topic. I really like the look of it with your garden shed and wish I HAD your fence.

To me the white vinyl looks like everyone elses straight from the lumber yard. Sort of the cookie cutter effect. What you have has class, charm and it's own character and goes well with what you have.

I would use the white vinyl in some modified form so it matches (to a degree) what you have now. Perhaps posts with lattice in between them.

Or if you want something like you have now without the constant replacing, what about white vinyl posts with the same wire fencing you have now, strung between them?

Well the wood is getting so old and breaking. the gate does not close right and we have a dog so I want to make it all new and uniform. Thanks for the compliments but here are the two styles we are looking at right now. always up for suggestions!!

Both of those types of fence look GREAT with roses on them.

In a practical sense:

Option 1: requires wire mesh fencing to keep dogs in
Option 2: move vinyl so no need for wire fencing but it might be more expensive because of the amount of vinyl used in this type.

Ill tell ya what....I think I am going to need to see more pictures of your yard.....lots more.

Well I don't have a ton of backyard photos but all my roses are back there so here is a slide show I had of the roses I have but it does show we have a privacy fence that is wooden but that is our neighbors so we can not change it but i put knockouts in front of it for color.. I am think of staining it this year on our side. The backyard post and rail is ours and other side of the yard that has the white simi privacy fence and old post and rail wooden fence is ours. I don't like the idea of having 3 types of fencing in the yard but being we live in a twin I can not get rid of the wooden privacy fence but i can match up the other side of the yard with white vynal all the way down the yard and around to the back where the white shed is..I just don't want a 6 foot vynal all the way down since we have that neigbors privacy fence so high it tends to close the yard in too much to me. I am leaning towards the post and rail white fence over the picket at the moment as it does cost less and I think looks better.. I think??? just wanted some opinions.. Here is the side show

I couldn't access it, jess. Pretty yard. I like the split rail because I think it would be easier to tie laterals onto for climbing roses.

Neighbors fence with my knockouts...We can not replace this fence but I put many knockouts in front of it to add color might even stain it this year. The backyard and other side I was hoping to have all white vynal. I like the idea of planting more roses with th post and rail using the wire mess thanks for the suggestion!!!

You know you might be right about choosing the picket over post in rail with wire mess. The intaller told me that the post and rail wire mess bends and rusts in time and it looks ok on a wooden fence as they fade together and you can not really notice. With a white vinyl post and rail it stands out more and the wire mess can not get as tight as a wooden post in rail but he did say he could get it as straight as possible if we choose that route. I kind of want a post and rail look but might also be happy with the picket in the long run.. Oh decisions are tough!!

That white lattice would look great tacked onto the back of that old wood fence with the knockouts in front...

Btw, the knockouts with the pink and the red interspersed really shows the color difference, that's a great picture!

I really like your fence with the lattice along the top, too bad they can't cut that down to be the 3 foot size...

Another option is to go with the white split rail and put the white lattice on it instead of wire...

Jess, If you're going to do white vinyl, I'd go with the picket looking fence. Maybe even one that has a negative curve. With a white arbor over the gate, or one of those gates and arbor that has a circular opening, I think that would look fantastic and keep the charming old fashioned look. Especially once it is covered in roses.

Found a few more of our backyard. The trampoline kinda spoiles the look but the kids have to have fun too!! Anyway I found some with our dog in them but gives so idea of what the old fence looks like and might help..

I would match it based on which looks best with the style of the house, and the surrounding ones. The first example reminds me more of a horse farm put in the country look, and the second a cottage garden look you might find in a city with older houses.

Many in the area have the old white picket around their homes here. Our neighbor tells me see wants to add white picket to her back yard. not sure when though so I feel I can go picket or post and rail with the black wire mess but maybe to keep uniform with her ideas should go with the picket?? Question is stright picket or the one with a dip in it??

I would definitely go with the picket fence(the negative curve one is lovely too), I think it fits with the rest of the atmosphere and would keep your gorgeous pup in. I just have to say, I absolutely LOVE your garden, its just beautiful. May I ask what flowers are spilling out of the window box in the second picture of your very first post? I've been looking for something just like that for my window box and nothing has seemed to fit the bill, TIA!

Thanks all I just have to find out if that one is tall enough as it says 46" and not sure if that is the highest part of the fence or where the dip is?? I also have to see how it will look around the shed as the last fence is post and rail which is 10 foot posts alittle longer then the picket. I am sure they can cut vinyl but with the dip not sure what that will look like. Thanks a bunch!!

The flowers in the box were some kind of cascading geraniums. I have to get them again this year as they held up so well in those boxes!!
