Wildflower Gardens and Seed Propagation

ourfamilygarden

Hi :)

I grow a variety of plants that grow wild in our yard. Most I received from a wild flower mix, about 5 years ago. They come back each year. Some of them are:

Evening Primrose

Sweet Williams

Purple Coneflower

Black-eyed Susans

Heath Aster

Foxglove

Lamb's Ears

I have many questions, and not sure where to begin. So, I'll just plunge in :)

1.) When do I harvest the seeds? I'm confused. With foxgloves, I'm told to let them stay on until they are completely dried up. What about the others?

2.) How can I determine when to harvest them, so I do not wait too long? IOW, before they shoot them off themselves.

3.) Do you sprnkle the seeds about?

4.) How do you prepare the ground? I don't grow them in pots indoors. With Evening Primrose, I try to harvest the seeds at the right time, and I sprinkle some of the seeds around. I used to just leave the fallen leaves. But, that made for a difficult clean up, came the spring. So, last year, I picked them up before the winter set in. What is a good mulch, that does not have to be removed?

I had considered mulching the leaves with the leaf blower (that also works somewhat as a mulcher. But, then I will end up with a lot of other seeds. May still be worth doing, however.

Thanks :)
