CI, TZ, SdlM all growing nicely now. I think this will be a good fragrance bed. I put Lion's rose in the back to add beauty and a good leafy background even though it isn't much on scent. I think if the base gets shaded by the others, it won't get disease. There's room to the right of Abe Darby for one more big rose. I think it's going to be Evelyn. Hopefully, it will work some magic for me. This is a good morning sun spot and gets shade in the hottest times of the day. My summer is a little hotter than Hoovb's but maybe it's close enough. I'm going to hope for the best. The only downside to this location is that it will take the full force of the Santa Ana wind from across the street. We are along the Santa Ana river channel and the wind blows strongly through the gap. It seems to be shifting later than Halloween now. I used to call it the Halloween Wind.

I have to admit that i have been trying to get 2 climbers, blaze improved & white dawn to grow in a location adjacent an arbor where i previously had a perfume breeze climber. i removed the perfume breeze because it never attained the height i wanted relative to the arbor. It was in the location for 3 years. This spring i ammended the soil with lots of compost, manure etc, and yet these 2 roses ( mentioned above) have been sitting there for months now. It’s like they are just in idle. I’m baffled why they won’t break new canes, show any development. Roses nearby are all exhibiting some kind of growth / change post flowering in late May/ June. i have read about this as well, but i suppose without scientific data to completely answer our questions, well I suppose we remain in the dark. Go ahead and make your changes and see what evolves. good luck.

Cupshaped roses, may I say that your tone here is inappropriate. As to your question, let me repeat that, given Waterhouse's fantasy genre, it's most likely a King Arthur's Rose, or Rose der Nibelungen. However, if Waterhouse indeed tried to near-faithfully depict an existing rose, then I think the rose comes close to La France. Because it's medium-light pink with lighter reverse, coming in a very fat globular and tidily arranged symmetrical shape, complete with folded-over petal rims, nodding of course. And it is after all - pink. I grow one in my garden. GdD's apricot flowers, which can be readily adored in our well-tended college garden and my favorite local nursery (Scotsdales) which sells potted Gloires by the dozen thoughout the year, usually veer toward the famous mustard-yellow hues, not as much toward a clear pink - at least here in Waterhouse's country. Also, Gloire is at its most glorious when fully opened (and not in bud), which brings out its huge flowers distinctively marked by untidily packed folded petals resulting in an asymetrical tea shape. So I think it's more likely to be depicted that way, fully opened in its glorious wildness - whereas the painting does not show a single fully opened or untidily packed tea bloom. La France otoh looks fantastic in its half-opened globular, tidy, symmetrical bud-stage, and this is the shape the rose has in the painting. But alas, chances are that it's not exactly any of them, GdD, La France, Adam, Mme Berard ... but a fantasy hybrid. Pretty though. Lilyfinch I bought Nahema because of Fragrancenutter's beautiful pics . Unfortunately my plant did not bloom much and the blooms blew away in a day (Heritage is one of its parents ) , cool weather had the best bloom & fragrance . It also grew 3 ft laterals before blooming on top . After 3 years I got tired of it and s/p it .
