Flat leaf - sounds like you are looking for purslane. I grow both - moss rose and purslane. They both do great from seed. I started mine in late February and they are just getting buds, should be blooming nice when I put them out in a couple weeks.

Hi Tom :) I am new to Moss Roses...never grown them or bought them but I happened to get a pack in a trade I did on GardenWeb as an extra. I remember looking it up and loving it then thinking if I could winter sow it. I think it's one of Trudi's guides on here about WS that says you can do it with Moss Roses. So I am gonna try to WS them as well! As far as when to winter sow them, they are an Annual so I would say March or April and then plant out after your last frost!! Each plant will die when it gets cold, but it will leave lots of little seeds if the flowers were pollinated. If the seeds can take where they fall, then you will get a constantly regrowing moss rose area, year after year. Otherwise, you'll have to manually collect and put seeds where you want them. Purslane acts this way also, in case you want a pink-flowering purslane plant. Pink rain lilies are also cute. They will naturalize by making more bulbs, but you can also plant seeds, which mature very fast from the seed pod. Otherwise, they are perennial.

ARS's official definition of "Old Garden Roses" is that ANY rose OF A CLASS OF ROSES that existed prior to 1867 is considered to be an "Old Garden Rose." SO, if I were to introduce a Tea Rose, say next month ... it would be an "Old Garden Rose." And people HAVE created modern-born "Old Roses". At the same time, Hybrid Musks and Polyanthas (as examples) are NOT "Old Garden Roses" because they did not exist as a class prior to 1867. Why 1867? Because that was the date of the introduction of the first Hybrid Tea Rose -- The first "Modern Rose".
