Peace and Chicago Peace

I have bought lots of new roses this year (about 20 that's alot for me!). I planted a Peace about 2 months ago, and today I found a Chicago Peace for a good price and it was a gorgeous plant. Neither bush has bloomed yet so I have no idea what they will be like.

I know that chicago peace is a sport of peace but that's all I know.

What are the differences between the 2 kinds? Is it worth owning both? Just curious what I'll get to see this year.

Well the original Peace is very famous and it is beautiful, yellow tinged pink. I think Chigago Peace is more pink tinged yellow and orange blends - it is very beautiful also. I prefer the latter myself. Neither have much fragrance, unfortunately.

anntn6b, clearly so, but it may well be that the rotting/composting of a wood chip mulch does a good enough of job of resembling their natural environment (I'd guess rotting tree trunks as a first suspect) that they associate well with that product.

What larger Austin for this spot?

I have WS2000 and Pat Austin. WS2000 blooms heartily and looks amazing with it's old rose intriguing fragrance, but I'm not sure it's what you want sizewise. It gets about 3x3 or 4x4 at most in z6. Pat Austin on the other hand grows quite a bit taller and typically has larger blooms for me. Pat Austin is most definitely orange when it opens, but it fades off to a light yellow with apricot/pink hues. So for you, it may seem a lot like what you already have with yellow and pink, but personally I think Pat Austin would look great because if it was by the pink and yellow roses, it would provide an extra color spectrum with orange, and it's yellow and pink tones would compliment the roses around it. My Pat Austin is new to me this year and is already 3 ft tall and blooming like crazy.

Using Grass B Gone around roses

The chemical in Grass B Gon is labeled as safe for 'over the top' application on roses, and most other broadleafs. 'Over the top' means that you can spray it right over the entire bed without harm to your roses. I don't go quite that far . . . I spray around the roses, but I don't worry if it gets on them. It's a selective herbicide that only kills plants in the grass family -- like the chemical in weed and feed only kills broadleaf weeds and leaves your lawn unharmed. I keep a bottle of GBG handy to get the Bermuda that creeps into my front borders under the brick edge. (I buy it in the concentrate form now, sold as Ornamec.) As soon as the grass shows up, I shoot it with GBG. It works very well. Connie

These are amazing pictures. I love the flaming peace and Chicago peace which I grow is one of my favorites. I can't get over how healthy and full your bushes are -- maybe I should really keep up with my spray schedule and mine might look like yours. Are yours grafted or own root? They are both very beautiful roses and well worth growing. The key thing is to get a good healthy virus-free clone. Peace has the characteristic of being not that fragrant on the plant, but quite fragrant when cut for the vase and brought indoors.

There has been a lot of poor material for sale the past few years and people wonder why their Peace does so poorly. Starting with a quality plant seems to be important.

I had both for about 3-4 years and they truly are very beautiful. I did eventually get rid of them both however because of their severe bs problems.

The chicago peace plant looks really vigorous I think it will be a good one. I got the Peace in a bodybag (oops! I know better now) it's growing pretty well. But if it doesn't thrive I'll know to get a better plant next time.

I'm excited to see their blooms. You all seem pretty positive about them.

This rose deserves its popularity, even with declining health. Both Peace & Chicoago Peace produce very beautiful blooms that last well cut. To my nose, Chicago Peace is a bit more fragrant and it seems easier to get a healthy plant. There are 3 three! plants of Peace in the modern roses at the arboretum where I work and the new plant from J&P seems no better than the older plant. The best of the 3 is a 10 year old plant (unknown origin) of Climbing Peace-- a generous bloomer, and with enormous stiff canes she stands on her own; we occasionaly have to lash an errant cane to a tomato stake to keep her out of the way of the guys who cut the grass.
