Ditching Flaming Peace, what to add (pic)
Comments (12)The three largest of your roses are really not doing too badly. If you dared to prune them harder in spring they might fill out more. If you can sacrifice size of flowers, it also helps with little tricks like cutting the tips of the young new canes early in season. If you take of just the tip early when there's about three fully developed leafs (where new growth can sprout) there is no setback of growth or production of flowerbuds. This is a bit fuzzy, but it makes a big difference. The flowers will be a bit smaller, but there will be more of them. I don't know why your F.Peace and Mr. Lincoln is not doing well, it's not at all typical of the varieties. What have you been giving them? If you can bother with regular liquid firtilizing, something organic with seaweed and other stuff it usually makes a big difference. With a bit of luck it can revive the weakest of roses. Mevrouw Nathalie Nypels usually behaves well, at least in a sunny spot. If you go for someting with a bit more fragrance Gruss an Aachen and Pink Gruss an Aachen are very well shaped plants. Best of luck with your roses :-)...See Morechicago peace
Comments (23)My old Pink Peace and Candy Stripe were Week's bare roots I bought back in the mid 1980s. The "good old days", when there were nurseries all over the Los Angeles area who still sold them BARE in boxes of saw dust. Week's even produced Radiance budded and bare root in those days. Other than rust and an occasional bout of mildew, they were beautiful roses. If you like stripes, also take a look at Banner, the striped sport of Charlotte Armstrong. Like a huge striped Camellia with prickles and Charlotte's mildew. Modern Times is the striped sport of Better Times, a famous old florist rose out of Columbia. If you can find Red and White Glory or Candy Stick, they are identical to Modern Times. Columbia sported to Briarcliff, named for the greenhouses who introduced it. Briarcliff sported further to Better Times, named in hopes that the more marketable color would lead to better times. When Better Times sported to stripes, they named it in honor of Charlie Chaplin's movie, "Modern Times". Red and White Glory/Candy Stick also sported from Better Times, only decades later for J. Benjamin Williams. After growing both for many years side by side, it was obvious they are identical. Comments (13)I went thru about 3-4 of them over the yrs before I finally kept one. The problem with this rose is it often reverts to its mama PEACE. Most especially when you first get it. If I would've kept the first one, I'm sure it would've eventually bloomed true. That's what happened with the one I have now. So, don't be surprised if it looks like PEACE the first season, or at least the first couple of bloomings. I found mine almost every yr at the local Long's Drug Store. They get in the cheapie bagged bareroots in early winter and they sell for only about $4.99-6.99, and they almost always have FLAMING PEACE! Mine tends to bloom a deep dark crimson with yellow reverse in early spring. Then as the season warms up, they turn a medium purply-pink with a more cream reverse. They really are quite lovely in all stages....See MoreIs this Flaming Peace?
Comments (5)Back when Flaming Peace was introduced, if I remember correctly, the blooms had the yellow of the peace rose, and petals had a vibrant reddish orange on their bases moving upwards/outwards, but never hiding the 'Peace' aspect of the blooms. I don't think FP had a yellow reverse and red inner petals....See Moremsmisk
