I grow The Pilgrim as a low climber/sprawler. Not sure about mannerly. The growth habit is very much like the other long octupus arm Austins. I would suppose with more severe pruning you could train it to several larger canes, but I let it do it's thing and tie the long stuff up on the deck railing directly above it, whatever makes it up there, pulled down horizontally (total height about 6-7 feet, with a spread of at least 8 feet). I love it. I don't have any good pics -- sorry. Very good rebloomer for me, and not too bad on disease even when I forget to spray.

My Pilgrim experiences were grim because my three were Park/Wayside RMV problems. But before the RMV took them down, I found that the plants could make eight foot tall canes that were/remained fairly flexible. It's one I would grow again, except for the sad memories of learning about RMV because of it.
One of the really neat things was an accidental bud removal of all but one bud in a spray and having that bloom develop into an eight inch wide sunflower like bloom. Back then I thought that was run of the mill and didn't photograph is. But it was neat (and obviously memorable.)

The Pegasus I have (which I think came from DA) is not a climber. I would say the the tallest cane is under 6'. That could be due to my zone or my soil, I'm not sure. I think my plant has RRD so it is not long for this world, unfortunately. Good luck and keep us posted on its progress.

I've seen a spectacular and big specimen of The Pilgrim grown as a climber here in the inner city of Cambridge (UK), blooming his head off in summer and fall and looking fully clad but well behaved (or trained). My own plant is still new and small, so I can't say too much about that one yet - except that it has bloomed quite well and regularly already. I had Teasing Georgia (grafted from DA) in the US for four years or so, and my sense is that she is bushier and a bit more unruly than the Pilgrim, engaging in huge spurts of growth from summer on. She didn't bloom all that much in her first year with me, but rapidly improved after that. So from year 2 on, her first and second spring/early summer flushes became increasingly spectacular, followed by some blooms here and there and finally a good fall flush, all improving over time. I think my little Pilgrim here is already more of a regular bloomer than TG, and doesn't show any of the aggressive growth. However, from what I could tell, he can make a great climber in a moderate climate like the southern UK (zone 8).

I do not grow Pegasus so I can't comment on it.

I've had THE PILGRIM for several years now and I must say that it is one of my favorite roses. I have two, trained as low climbers up a trellis attached to the west side of my house. The growth habit is typical of a Large Flowered Climber. Loooooong arching canes that can virtually sprout overnight. When training be careful. Very young canes do have an annoying habit of snapping at the base. The lattice on the trellises is rectangular and widely spaced (instead of diamond shaped and closely spaced). I trained the canes straight up and then turned the side shoots horizontal. Every inch of structure is covered up to 8 feet. These two trellises are fronted by raised beds filled with reblooming blue and lilac colored bearded irises, dwarf shasta daisy and dwarf purple cone flower, fronted by lavender. THE PILGRIM has a habit of blooming early. In the spring he hits his peak bloom just as the irises are finishing off their first flush. It is an AMAZING sight. I regard The Pilgrim as the most beautiful yellow rose that I've ever seen. The color is a glistening white on the outer petals blushed a pure canary yellow in the center, sometimes with a green button "eye" or "pip". The Old Garden Rose flower form is sheer perfection on each and every bloom. The strong Tea rose fragrance has a lovely herbal base note, with the total perception being one of utmost freshness. Just wonderful on a hot summer day. THE PILGRIM also has the habit of blooming along his entire length. Perhaps because of the way I trained him? I don't know. What I DO know is that I would not be without this rose. Rebloom is okay, although not as much as I'd like; I attribute this more to the fact that I have him in a partially shaded spot. He bloomed more when I grew him as a tall upright shrub in full sun. The light green foliage is clean with infrequent spraying. I don't have a digital camera, so sorry about no pics. Here is one from Hortiplex. IMHO this rose is a must have for those who live in Mid-Atlantic.

I should mention that the two roses are growing own root. THE PILGRIM is so vigorous on his own roots that he really doesn't need the help of a grafted rootstock. In fact, don't be surprised if he fully establishes himself by the second year in the ground. Both roses came from CHAMBLEES.

I certainly appreciate your response to this post. In your opinion, how tall do you think you could train The Pilgrim? I've got a spot on my barn that is about 6 ft wide but almost 40 ft tall that I'd like to fill with the right rose.
