why are you wanting LH in the blazing sun? I only ask because mine is in a morning sun, afternoon shade spot and she still fades when it's really hot. jw.

My Buff Beauty gets afternoon sun from about 12 noon to 5:00PM OR 6:00PM depending on the time of year. She does fade quickly, but initially her peachy blooms are quite vivid. She might hold her color and blooms longer on the 'not so blazing sun' arch.

I'm excited about these structures, and I can visualize some "secret" garden vignettes beyond each arch. But, getting back to Lady Hillingdon...I guess I thought that, for Teas, the hotter and more sun the better...? I'm new to this.

I did read that Cornelia and Opal Brunner look very similar...according to Beales.

What a lovely selection of roses and what great structures. You probably can't go wrong. One thing I can add is that my Opal Brunner has been extremely slow to grow. I think it needs more sun than I have given it.

All good choices. In my climate the hybrid musks get thick canes after a couple of years. Danae gets really large. Lady Hillington has nice soft canes and is not too aggressive. Have you considered some chinas like Slater's Crimson and Crimoisi Superior. Louis Phillipe is easy to train also.

I've had the same experience with hybrid musks developing thick canes. I wonder if some of the teas wouldn't be wonderful climbers, with more repeat than the hybrid musks. Rosette Delizy apparently can reach great heights. I have a band of Apricot Wall Tea, an unknown rose that climbs and sprawls, and this band of less than a foot tall already has buds on it. I purchased this from Rogue Valley. People like Jeri and Jerome and others could probably give more advice, if you were inclined toward the tea idea.

I'm open to all kinds of options...but, I do need to place these roses...and, I thought these might fit the bill...I've also got the Apricot Wall Tea arriving this month...I could also include Collette into the mix.

Robert, Teas may reach the height you want but they usually have a width to match their height here. My Buff Beauty is a young plant but I do find the young canes easy to train so far. I suspect if you were diligent about training the canes before they were too mature, it would be manageable. My Lady Hillingdon is in full sun and she does fade some but I still like the color of the faded blooms. I think you have a wonderful list of roses and you may as well use the ones you already have. Your arch's will be a beautiful sight with the blend of roses and clematis you have chosen. Any of the colors of these roses should compliment each other!

I'd put Lady H. in the full sun; she's more susceptible to blackspot than many other teas and HM's. I love all these roses and the soft blending of pastel shades will be wonderful! Gee, those arches look great.

I've wondered why people put LH in full sun; i've heard others mention that they do also; one even in Arizona, I think, in another thread last year that said she did really well. Maybe bs issues was the reasoning behind it.

Mine didn't have bs issues during its first year, but i've heard that sometimes there are fewer issues during the early years of a rose's life.

I've also heard others say that the apricot teas do better with afternoon shade so I wondered about Robert's thinking because I don't know the answer. So, thank you for another tidbit of info. to consider.

I can hardly wait until I have enough experience to know for sure what works for me, here.

Robert, I wasn't at all being critical; I just wanted to know why.

One won't really know what will happen until he tries it in his own micro-climate, with his own growing practices, and the particular clones of the roses he has...There are, indeed, so many factors to consider.

I am glad to hear that no one has thrown up a "red flag" and said some of the choices would be a huge mistake.

I hadn't realized Danae would get large. I'll need to move her from her current location no matter what, I think.

Lady H. Does not look very good in blazing sun. I keep my (bush, not cl) Lady H. in a pot so I can move it to a shadier spot in summer otherwise the blooms look washed out and ugly.
Buff Beauty (mine is multiflora grafted) is a huge plant and can be trained. I would not put it in full sun either because than the blooms get washed out - not so bad as with Lady H. but still..

IMHO not all the teas are created equal, meaning not all the teas were bred in Provence or very hot climate. Lady H. was bred in England; so was the HM Buff beauty.

This is a photo of Lady H in full sun. I guess it is just a personal thing, but I don't think the faded blooms are ugly, just more muted and creamy in color.

I feel Lady Hillingdon is a beauty also. I think her blooms are beautiful no matter what. I also feel the teas need full sun, but if they get 6 to eight hours worth they should be fine. Morning sun with aftetrnoon shade is much better than morning shade and afternoon sun. I'm thinking of planting mine near Mutabilis. (Well, probably at least 10 feet from him).

Hybrid Musks have the reputation of doing well with less sun than some of the other roses so I imagine you might want to consider those for the more shaded areas. I had Cl. Lady Hillingdon in the sun and it did fine. If you give enough water and a fertilizer like alfalfa meal, you should always have some darker yellow buds on the plant to contrast with the lighter open blooms. At any rate, with the colors you've chosen your arches should be absolutely beautiful. I'm glad you've stayed with the softer shades, which will be complemented really well by the blue clematis.
