Tree or shrub for narrow strip near driveway; northern exposure

A year and a half ago I planted two Alberta Dwarf Conifers trees to the side of the driveway (had removed a strip of grass which was about 4'x20'), one behind the other spaced at about four feet behind the other.

The conifer closest to the house has survived but after this winter, one of them died (closest to the street), all needles came off and there's just patch at the bottom that has survived.

First, is this a good type of tree to plant next to a driveway and second, is this a good tree for northern exposure, it gets some morning and some afternoon sun (pure northern exposure with some shade from the adjacent house).

If this isn't a good selection, what is for a thin strip area next to a driveway.

I'm fine with a shrub, bush or small tree.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
