Fast growing volunteer - weed or flowering plant-part 2?

Oops - somehow the link got lost, so let's try this again...

I just found this forum and am very grateful as, being a novice gardener, I haven't a clue what this character might be. It just showed up in the corner of our back yard a few weeks ago -- and look at it! Grows faster than anything I've ever seen. Maybe it's a present from the birds or the squirrels, but I know I didn't plant it and we've never had anything like it in the 20+ years we've lived here (in the Central Valley of California if that information will help). When it first showed up, thought I'd watch it a while and see what developed but the speed it grows is unsettling. It's about 4-5 foot tall, with a lot of purple in the stems and tiny, creamy yellowish-white "flowers" hanging in almost grape-like clusters. There appear to be 2 kinds of these clusters; one kind has the tiny flowers kinda surrounded by a green hull; the other kind seem to remain in the hull form and are significantly bigger. Anybody recognize this? Friend or foe?
