I just bought 2 new generation J&P roses from Costco. They had them for sale in 2 packs this past month. I have no idea if they are going to continue with them or not but I hope they will. I've had fabulous results with all my J&P new generation roses.

The catalog says "own root" for a few selections as does the web site (Iceberg, for example). But they don't have a separate section in the catalog or the web site that I can find. I guess they want you to dig...

If you check the J&P Wholesale site, that will at least tell you which varieties they are making available as own root, but that doesn't guarantee that all garden centers will have them.

Our boxes aren't here yet (I might be speaking too soon, I need to check Costco this week).

I'm pretty sure the J&P boxes I saw at Lowes the other day had at least a few marked as own root--and I think I saw the New Generation label also. I was disappointed that they didn't have anything newer than 2004. I also have had great luck with the new generation roses. Are they maybe limiting these to just independent nurseries? It's possible J&P is in for great changes with their new ownership. yikes!

I called J&P today and got the answer I needed. Veteran's Honor will not be carried own root ("New Generation")this year. The 800 number for J&P is actually just an answering service (polite and friendly) for J&P, so they do not have any information about the future plans of J&P. They did not have a phone number for the actual J&P headquarters (or an e-mail address). On the wholesale catalog (Thanks Diane) I did not see a list of the roses they will carry own root. Instead you must pull up each variety individually and see if the blurb has the New Generation logo. Too bad about Vet's Honor. I've heard good things about it being own root. I wonder what their thinking (or lack of it) is/was.

I have had good luck with J&P's New Generation roses including a very nice bush of Veterans' Honor. My VH own root is very vigorous and floriferous. I like it better than my VH bush that I bought from them on Dr. Huey rootstock four years ago. My three year old own-root is bigger and more vigorous and I think the blooms are better formed and more plentiful than the grafted one.
I hate to hear that they are no longer going to have New Generation roses.

I may have said that wrong but J&P will have some New Generation roses again this year, just not the one I was specifically interested in (Vet's Honor).... I was a little leary about J&P own root roses but I bought Tuscan Sun from them as a New Generation rose a couple of years ago and was impressed by how quickly it took off right from the get go. Tuscan Sun btw is still available as a New Generation rose.

Boo hoo. I went back to Lowes to see if they had finally uncovered the pallets of J&P roses, and checked the boxes for the label. Nope. Must have been wishful thinking on my part. I was really looking forward to buying Billy Graham and Disneyland Rose, but NONE of the boxes had any indication of own root or New Generation, and I could see grafts on most. Their marketing backfired. I bought many of the New Generation roses, and they did so well for me that I won't buy their grafted ones. I'm wondering if roses like Lemon Zest, which is a shrub rose, is own-root and they just didn't label it? What are their marketing people thinking? Prices were high, too. 16.98 for the smallish box. I'm hoping they get in newer varieties in pots later, because I'm not buying from this shipment.
