Comments (2)I'd give them a bit more time before cutting back......it could be unnecessary. By that I mean it is possible that these plants have suffered irreparable cold damage and should just be replaced. Typically, Schips have a die-off point of around 0F to -10. Anything lower than that for more than a day or two would certainly put them in harms way. There's still some green so possibly some hope. If still alive and viable, you should see the shrubs pushing some new buds along the stems soon. That would be a good time to remove any browned or dead portions....See MoreSchip Laurel Help
Comments (4)Yeah, like Ken said, any branch tips that are dry and crispy are done for. Hopefully your plant will leaf out from below. I know it doesn't look great, but I would hold off trimming until after the new growth commences...maybe in May. Then you'll know for sure what's alive and what's dead. Likely you can keep at least the bottom third of the plant. Skip laurels are borderline in zone 6 so, remember to plant any marginally-hardy broad-leaved evergreens in SPRING, not Fall. They'll have a better root system to survive the rigors of a harsh winter -- which we just had, as you can see. Once they get established, in a few years, they should become a bit hardier...that is if we don't have 3 brutal winters in a row....See MoreLosing our Schip Laurel (turning brown)
Comments (5)Your laurel is clearly alive and should recover completely with time. ==>>> i agree with the caveat ... that if you end up with dead branches.. and then have to prune them out.. then it comes down to how ugly it might be ... and if you want to put up with its new form .. or put it out of your misery ... i like to say .. if an ugly bush.. is out on the back 4 acres... i will watch it .. and play with it... and make something of it... even if it take 3 to 5 years ... but if its right out the front door... where it will irritate me every single day of my life.. it has to go.. my misery and all ... lets hope you dont have to deal with all that .... maine seems to think not ... ken...See Morezooba72
