when to use a fungicide/disease control?

I just planted several new roses and they are just beginning to leaf out. When do I need to use a fungicide/disease control? Do I wait til they are completely leafed out or can I go ahead and do it now? I want to do it as a preventative measure to ensure they stay nice and healthy! Thanks for any help!

IMO, it depends on what you're spraying with. Oils are usually used early, when temps are under 70F and leaves are new or barely existant. Copper based chemicals can be safe up to temps of 80F. Since I'm in the desert southwest, our spraying window can be mighty short. It's always best (and easiest) to spray a fungicide before the disease rears it's ugly head. This year I'm trying something new... Rose PHarm, a peppermint oil. For the price, I hope it works. All I'm really spraying for is powdery mildew but there's a chance I might have scale.

If you are using a pure preventive (Daconil) then you must start as soon as the bushes are leafed out. If you are using a systematic (Bayer advanced disease control) then you can wait a bit.

There is no sense doing the preventive now if there are no leaves.

You just had to say it! I have already elevated my seedlings toward the light using plastic glasses! So what I am gonna do is set the fan with the light timer, so the seedlings will get air circulation during the day. I also could not stand the sound of the fan while I am sleeping, and definitely my sleep is more important than my seedlings ahah! That means the fan will be turned off during the night no matter what. Thanks!

Can you use Bayer Disease Control on new growth?

Actually it will stop the blackspot even after it starts. The leaves that are already spotted are goners, but there are leaves that have spores on them that have not shown spots yet. The Bayer spray will kill those spores. And yes, you can spray it on new growth.

There is a thi8ng called Intergrated Pest Management. It basically says to inspect your garden daily for pests and see if there is another way of dealing with them, like picking off blackspotted leaves as they start. It also says is the problem big enough to need to use chemicals. I walk thru my rose garden everyday. This way I know what's going on. If I see bs starting on a plant I can pick off those leaves. if it is one plant that's worse than the others, yes, remove it. I dug up Peace for that reason. If you know you will have bs, start off the season with a good spray program and you won't have it at all. Unless it's raining all the time and you can't do it like what happened to me a few years ago! These are just some suggestions to help you.

Your welcome. Also it looks like one of my baby windmill palms has it too (its potted). I dont really pay attention to it so I didnt notice it as anything bad. It actually developed a year ago, but the palm is still growing well and the new fronds have no sign leaf spot. I also have it a little on my areca palm. They usually get it from the nursuries because palm "bugs" are not really common in a zone 7 because of a lack of palms (sadly, about the lack of palms, not the fungus). Good new is that the fungus is rarely fatal. I heard that copper based fungicide helps and also keeping the leaves as dry as possible. The growth with the fungus on it will not improve, but treatment should prevent it from spreading. Try to keep the palm dry because any rainfall should take care of watering. If you are getting alot of rain then you might have to find away of keeping it dry. I water mine when the soil gets dry which is usually 1 time a week if its really sunny and moderately warm. Where do you live?
What kinds of roses are you growing?
What disease are you trying to prevent?
What fungicide are you planning to use?

I live in Central NJ, I grow all kinds of roses, I have heavy blackspot pressures. I start spraying a week after pruning (some plants will have leafed out by then some won't) and continue through September (most of the time). Blackspot overwinters on the canes. I use BannerMaxx and mancozeb and if I am on schedule, I spray every two weeks.

Thanks for the infomation! I live in Northwest Ga. and I'm just starting to plant hybrid teas, english and other varieties. I have tons of knockouts and obviously don't have to worry much about disease with them. I don't really know what diseases would be common to this area...it looks like buford is in Northeast GA so he might can offer more advice. What is the difference between Daconil and the Bayer? Which would you recommend? I have planted around 25 roses so far and some aren't leafed out at all and others are just beginning to leaf out. Thanks again for any help.
