Anyone know how to control leaf spot? fungicide?

I think a few of my windmills have leaf spot disease. I posted some pics yoday under the post "dark spots on windmill fronds" if anyone wants to see the symptoms. After reading, I'm not certain that's the problem, but it certainly seems to be. There are dark brown/black spots on some of the fronds, and now the fronds are turning an ugly yellow color. The info I read pretty much described this process. Could be yellowing disease, but I don't think so, as the dark spots are not a symptom associated with it. Please help, as my trees are defoliating rather quickly!!!

Your welcome. Also it looks like one of my baby windmill palms has it too (its potted). I dont really pay attention to it so I didnt notice it as anything bad. It actually developed a year ago, but the palm is still growing well and the new fronds have no sign leaf spot. I also have it a little on my areca palm. They usually get it from the nursuries because palm "bugs" are not really common in a zone 7 because of a lack of palms (sadly, about the lack of palms, not the fungus).

Good new is that the fungus is rarely fatal. I heard that copper based fungicide helps and also keeping the leaves as dry as possible. The growth with the fungus on it will not improve, but treatment should prevent it from spreading. Try to keep the palm dry because any rainfall should take care of watering. If you are getting alot of rain then you might have to find away of keeping it dry. I water mine when the soil gets dry which is usually 1 time a week if its really sunny and moderately warm.

thanks tz7. I saw last night on treehelp.com that the copper fungicide would help, so I'm going to get some today. I didn't ever think much about it either until the last two weeks, when one of my biggest ones continued to yellow.

perennialfan, one of the most overlooked step in IPM is to identify which plants are inherently susceptible to specific disease and/or insect problems and to avoid bringing them into the garden. Unfortunately, your Rudbeckia is especially prone to septoria, and other leaf diseases, as well. This is your reality, no matter what the condition of the soil is. It's especially true now that this location has seen a bad outbreak. However, there are some things you can do that might make a difference. Doing all you can to foster a healthy soil system IS important, of course. And hopefully, you did a good housekeeping job in the rubbeckia bed last year by removing all of the old mulch and fallen debris from the plants. Avoid over crowding and over-head watering, too. You might want to research the possibility of 'disease resistant' hybrids, I don't if anything like that exists for Rudbeckia. Good luck! Maybe last year was a fluke and with some good management practices you can have a nice display this year. It's one plant that is missing from my gardens (by choice), however.

Hi bluebovine, Picture of leaf = very yellow. Spikes formulation sounds weak in Nitrogen at NPK of 2-7-4 for tomatoes (compare Miracle G tomato formula 18-18-18). Your guano is another variable. International marketed products can be NPKs of 10-3-1, 8-4-1, 3-10-1 ( some even 1-10-0.2, 2-15-2, or 6-15-3). The acidic medium of bats excretion tends to degrade nitrogen availability in the guano, so individual commercial deposits vary in NPK. If you are Nitrogen shorting the plant, by both spikes & chosen guano, then vegetative growth & amino acid synthesis of proteins will suffer. (Your liquid fertilizer NPK is another formula to factor in.) If you are concurrently fertilizing on an ongoing basis (via what you stuck in the soil) with high Phosphorus your nutrient formula is capable of causing an imbalance. Nitrogen deficiency in the plant is possible, even when some Nitrogen is technically available to the roots. In fact, your spots seem to be dead cells showing up; more a symptom of vegetative tissue deterioration than an attack from something. This does not mean supplementing with more Nitrogen is the proper course; unless you balance what you are feeding them a yo-yo effect will drive you beserk . ? What are your other fertilizer ratios ?

From the research I've just been doing on my early blight, which is what I see on yours (not the dreaded late blight), you need to get ALL of the affected leaves off there, because the spores are easily transferred from leaf to leaf, and yes, continue spraying. Serenade is an organic spray that's often recommended, and Daconil is also very popular (I don't know if it's organic though). And when you pluck off all those leaves (very carefully, so as not to spread the spores even more), you should bag them up very carefully and tightly, or burn them. Don't compost them, because you'll just be incubating the spores into your compost, which will cause further trouble. Good luck! The only reason I sprayed a few days in a row was because I followed what another person online said they did and seen good results. The progression of the shot hole stopped after those few days of spraying. No more leaves have turned yellow and died, even the leaves that are remaining with small spots/holes still in them. My concern now is if the tree this season would "re-sprout" new leaves on the branches where they have fallen off. Because since this tree is of a small size still it doesn't take much defoliation to appear "bald" there are only a few branches with leaves still on them. But the branches appear to be very much alive still, after pruning a couple and seeing beneath the bark. But being were in september now I have already accepted i'm not going to see any new growth of leaves this season it appears here in the Mid-Altantic. I'm just hoping that these very same "bald" branches dont permanently stay bald when next spring comes.

Sprayed my two infected trees with liquid copper fungicide today. I am now letting the rain take care of the watering too. Maybe now they'll stop going down hill for the first time in several weeks. I think they actually already looked a little better, since I've cut back from watering for close to two weeks now. I noticed that the copper also says it helps as a frost preventative as well. It was only about $7 for a concentrated container that will last forever. I was at a local nursery today, who had two like mine, but one looked awful and the other looked ok. That made me feel better about mine, as I've always heard windmills are very resilient. They still wanted $250 for the one that looked like crap! Good luck selling that. It was a boxed tree about 4' tall.
Thanks for helping me try to get a handle on my two problem trees.

Glad it worked. I might buy some copper fungicide too just to have it. It also works really well if you get spear pull after a bad winter.
