brick formal waterfall construction

I was thinking of building a brick box and filling it with hydro-ton stones, and topped with a layer of pea stone. A lip or slit in the wall will allow the water to escape via a waterfall into a stream and then into a pond.

Now I have some possible issues of concern in doing this.

1) How do i connect the tubing from the pump to the brick box?

I need the entrance point to be waterproof (obviously) and inconspicuous. Do I use the space between bricks as an enterance point and use some sort of culking and just keep it on the back away from sight... is the only solution to drill a hole in a brick (which would possibly cause the brick to crack)? Any other ideas?

Now for the interior of the brick box, I'm planning on using concrete to cover the walls and then using a liquid pond liner to waterproof it... is there any problem with this idea?

A filter to me is just a plastic box filled with a material to keep large particles from dumping back into the pond, as well as growing bacteria to fight algae. Is there any advantage to a bought filter?
