How much tablespace can a 4 T8 bulb shoplight cover adequately?

Hello,

I've read what I can find on light frequencies, shoplight vs growlight, hours per day, etc, etc but can't find info on how lumen output and distance interplay.

"Put the light practically on top of the plants" is what I see over and over for advice, but the lower the light drops the less it "broadcasts" the light out to the sides and the more it just covers an area equal to the light fixture size.

What's the trade off in light output of the fixture vs distance from the plants? If you have four T8s or even four T5, or four Hight Output T5, it seems like you could lift the light a bit higher, cover more table space and grow more plants.

Am I way off base? I just don't know if there are any guidelines to follow beyond "have you light as close to the plants as possible" ?

No you aren't way off base. :) Basically you hit the nail on the head. Suspended no more than 2" above the plants, the effective foot print of any fixture is slightly less than the dimensions of the fixture itself. So a 4'x2' has approx. a 3.75x1.75 effective footprint.

But "adequately" is the key word. Defining it when growing seedlings that are acceptable for garden transplants is very different from defining it when using artificial light to provide optimal growth, bloom, and fruit indoors. So I'll assume you are talking about growing seedling transplants for the garden. If not then the Growing Under Light forum is the place to go.

And there are other variables. T8 bulb fixture are only marginally better than the old T12 fixtures so for all practical purposes the effective footprint is the same. T5 fixtures are measurably better than T8 and allow them to hang a couple of inches higher and still be as effective.

How much does that added height of the T5 increase your effective foot print? Not much. It basically eliminates the dead space loss at the ends of the tubes and brings you up to full fixture dimensions. The fixture ends will still be weaker - more equivalent to T8 - but adequate.

There are other factors of course - types of bulbs, other ambient light, age of the bulbs, etc. but for all practical purposes when using fluorescent tube light fixtures, the "adequacy" footprint is the size of the fixture itself. To improve on that you have to move into the high power fixtures, the big CFLs, HPS, and metal halide. They will have much bigger footprints than the fixture size.

A simple rule of thumb when growing seedling transplants is "more is better and closer is better". You can easily have too little light but you can seldom have too much light.

Wow, I wasn't expected that the light footprint was going to be so close to the fixture size.

I was hoping that a four bulb fixture with the more powerful T5 or High output T5 would be able to site a bit higher and maybe hit a space 50% larger than the fixture and do the job.

MD, "Will the stronger light make healthier plants? Or are these used more for growing full size and tropical plants?" Like OverDrive said, the greater light intensity will produce better seedlings. I grow a lot of zinnias, and zinnias have a big appetite for light, and will stretch and become somewhat leggy or spindly under regular fluorescent lighting. This is an example of zinnia seedlings that were staying compact and healthy under overdriven T8s. The strategy for providing fluorescent lights to your seedlings is first, hang as many regular fluorescent fixtures over them as will physically fit. Then continue to increase the light on those plants by overdriving those fixtures. If you have two two-bulb T8 fixtures and you cannibalize one to get a second ballast for the other, you will only get about 70% more light from the single overdriven fixture as compared with 100% more light if you simply hang the second fixture over your seedlings. So it doesn't make sense to overdrive your fixtures until you have hung as many of them as you can over your seedlings. In "the good old days" when you could get a bargain two-bulb T8 shoplight fixture from Home Depot for $4, it did make sense to buy fixtures and cannibalize them, because then most sources of T8 ballasts cost more than $4 per ballast. I continued to buy and cannibalize 2-bulb T8 shoplights from Home Depot up until a few years ago when the price of a fixture went over $8. At that time I quit cannibalizing T8 ballasts and started buying separate ballasts for two reasons. First, the ballasts in the cheap shoplights were themselves cheap and they didn't last very long. Typically, my T8 bulbs would outlast my cheap cannibalized T8 ballasts. And second, I found a source of reasonably priced higher quality 2-bulb T8 ballasts that I could use to overdrive my existing fixtures and replace the rapidly failing ballasts in my original overdriven fixtures. So I now have a supply of better T8 ballasts that I use to replace my cheaper T8 ballasts as they fail. I am still a big fan of overdriving. The next step up from overdriving T8s (and possibly T5s) is HID lighting, and that costs considerably more money. ZM

If you are in an area served by Southern California Edison they are subsidizing the cost of various kinds of fluorescent light fixtures and CFL bulbs. Ganahl lumber in Buena Park had the 4 foot single tube light fixtures on sale today for $1.99 and they will take either a T8 or T12 bulb. One trouble is they don't come with a power cord and a power cord at home depot will cost you between $6 and $8, which is more than the light fixture. I found a place online that had a closeout on 6 foot power cords for $1.59 each, but I had to pay $11 for shipping. I am building a 12 tube seed starting setup. If you have some old electronic equipment you could salvage the cords off them, or cut up an old extention cord. But the cord must be the grounded 3 conductor type as the fixture has to be grounded to light up properly. They also had 23 watt CFLs for 25 cents each, limit 14 per family.

I've said this already to someone (maybe you?): if CRI was the only thing that mattered then we'd be growing tomatoes under a 40W incandescent bulb :) The amount of light is the most important thing. Lumens are the most widely used method of measuring light intensity, unfortunately not the best for plants. Even more unfortunately, just about every other method of measuring light intensity is so vaguely defined or so widely abused that it isn't of much use to you. So chasing lumens is a pretty good start, but note that some lamps with low lumen numbers actually produce just as much light, its just light that we don't see so well. The Gro-Lux lamps are a good example. But also look at some wide spectrum "daylight" lamps and you'll see slightly lower lumens, but these lamps are actually putting out just the same number of photons that can be used by plants. It is also worth calculating how many lumens per watt you are getting. An inefficient lamp may give you slightly more lumens but use a lot more electricity, and you'd be better off using a smaller highly efficient lamp for more hours or getting two of them. As an extreme example, a 40W fluorescent tube puts out about barely half as much light as a 400W halogen bulb but the halogen bulb uses ten times as much electricity. Using two 40W bulbs gets you the light and saves you big on your utility bill. Spectrum is also crucial, but the lucky thing for you is that almost any fluorescent tube (excepting weird stuff like black lights, lizard UV lamps, or actinic coral reef lamps) provides a more or less suitable spectrum with at most a few percentage points difference for use lighting geeks to argue about. Get cool whites (4100K temperature), daylights, (5000K-6500K), or a mix with warm whites (3000K) and you'll be fine. CRI is, frankly, close to irrelevant to a plant. The most efficient lighting sources available, in terms of getting plant growth for the least electricity, have such disjointed spectra that you can't meaningfully calculate a CRI. Gro-Lux fluorescents, which whether you think they're better than regular fluorescents or not certainly grow plants, have a CRI in single digits. So, plants clearly aren't that bothered about CRI. But, having said all that, there are some good reasons to choose a fluorescent lamp with a high CRI, assuming you are choosing amongst more or less "normal" fluorescents. CRI stands for colour rendition index and colours appear more realistic under a bulb with a CRI of 90 or more. The wider spectrum may also (or may not) provide more light in the best areas for photosynthesis, but the difference isn't huge. Much has been written and debated about which fluorescent spectra are best for plants, and by how much, but whatever the answer, CRI isn't the right way to measure it.

Many (most?) electronic ballasts will correctly operate fluorescent tubes in many different lengths, therefore it wouldn't be surprising for a 32W ballast to operate a 18W tube at normal brightness. It sounds pretty "smart" but most T8 tubes run on exactly the same current (265mA) and the ballast must regulate this current over a wide range of voltages even for a single 4' tube. Not a big step to build it to regulate exactly the same current over a slightly wider range of voltages and operate many different tube lengths. There is a slight wrinkle when it comes to running T8 or T12 tubes. T12 (normal output) tubes throughout the world run on 430mA, while most T8 tubes in North America run on 265mA. Therefore many ballasts will not correctly operate the two types of tube, or they may normally operate a T12 and overdrive a T8. In Europe, T8 tubes also run on 430mA and these tubes can also sometimes be found in the US. Any T8 marked as 36W will be a 430mA tube, whereas the standard 32W T8 runs at 265mA. Confused yet? Just for completeness, there are T8 HO tubes, rarely seen that run at 380mA typically in a 44W power. T12 HO tubes run at 800mA and 60W in a 4' length. T12 VHO tubes run at 1500mA and 116W at 4' long but usually supplied as longer tubes. T5 tubes run at 460mA and are often called High Output (HO) but that is somewhat meaningless since there is only one kind.

I am sure Dave is right about the footprint, but practically speaking, two double lamp fixtures (4 bulbs) are what most people use successfully for 4 standard sized trays of seedlings. With the narrower t-8 fixtures, some of my shelves have 3 double bulb lamps, but I am not seeing a big difference in the plant health / size., Nor do I see much difference in the plants that are "between" the bulbs, as opposed to directly under them.

I second Mandolls' thoughts. Here is my set-up.

No issues with 2 sets of t8's lighting 4 standard and 1 half tray. The trays the peppers are in are smaller than standard trays so I can easily light 5 of those trays. I too don't see much difference in the plants that fall between light bulbs.
