I have several Don Juans, as they are my husband's favorite red rose. Don is a climber, and you'll definitely need a trellis. It does black spot, so you'll need to spray in order to keep it healthy. That said, it is one of my fastest repeat bloomers, and is usually covered in pretty red roses. I's pretty typical rose in that the more sunlight it gets, the better it will do (my two against the house aren't as prolific as the one away from the house that gets more sun). It likes to be fed, I mostly use Miracle Grow for roses, though there are many on this forum that are more organic about their feeding. It kind of takes over its space, so if you want to put it in an area with other flowers, you'll need to give it a lot of room in after it's established. It's not evergreen here - it drops its leaves in winter just like all my other roses.

I would think some of the Atlanta crowd has Don Juan and will chime in here. I agree with DancingNancy55, its a rather robust climber with large stiff canes, requires protection against Blackspot and like all climbers eats like a football player. I have 8 red climbers, it is easily the most prolific bloomer and repeats the fastest as long as it has the nutrition.

I'm more of an organic feeder. I used Mills Magic Mix for years, but now use alfalfa meal/pellets, cottonseed meal, fishmeal, Ironite or chelated iron and lots of compost. If you are a wildflower sort of girl, you may be more comfortable with organics.

Roses, bloom longer than any other shrub in North America. The typical shrub has a short blooming period and then its foliage for the remainder of the season. Roses are capable of blooming from early spring until way late in the fall in your zone. To do that, they need the nutrition. I think people are often disappoint in their roses because they don't offer sufficient nutrition.

Train the canes while they are young and pliable, they can become rather stiff as the age some.

I have Don Juan. Mine hasn't gotten that big. I think it is cold sensitive and suffered during the freeze last year.

But it is full of new growth now. It is a great bloomer and the flowers are a beautiful full red, velvety and heavily scented. I wouldn't be without it.

I do spray and DJ is susceptible to BS and PM in my yard.

What a beautiful picture of Don! The Easter freeze last year about did mine in.Because of your picture, I will replace him with a new strong Don cause I really missed those yummy blooms. I only got a handful of blooms last year. Thanks...Lesley

If ever a rose should be dedicated to Johnny Depp it is Don Juan. (after seeing the movie with him that is the first thing I think of when I see the rose)

I saw DJ at lowe's yesterday in a box from JP. They are easy to find. I have one coming this year too!

I had a lady give me three Don Juans last fall. Right now they are buried in the ground. I have a spot on my chainlink fence that I will put them on.
